Introduction
people

Githurai is a busy market centre located 12KM on the Eastern part of Nairobi; the capital city of Kenya. It is a residential area for the middle and lower class citizens who are either employed or self-employed within Githurai and its outskirts and the unemployed. This stratification is characterized by few families who can afford luxurious life while the rest wallow in abject poverty.
According to the 2005 census report done by the Central Bureau of Statistics, the population in Githurai is approximately 320,729, majority being children and youth. 47% of the population lives below poverty line characterized by lack of proper housing, poor infrastructure, poor access to health care facilities and lack of quality education. A large number of children fail to attend school due to lack of basic needs.
A few organizations have endeavored in bringing solutions facing this community. Having this in mind, Kenyatta University (in its 10 year strategic plan) has began an initiative to identify problems and develop solutions thereby contributing to the sound economic growth of the community.
