Women in Agribusiness

 Objectives

The overall goal of the course is to promote recognition and development of agribusiness as a platform for national development and a pathway for empowering women and youth.

Specific objectives:
• To identify opportunities for, and innovations in agribusiness.
• To explore possible value chain segments for different types of agricultural enterprises in specific country contexts.
• To build the capacities of women and youth as leaders in the agribusiness sector
• To facilitate the development of business plans for implementation as viable agricultural enterprises.
• To contribute and provide leadership in policy development on agricultural enterprise.

UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION AND MAPPING OPPORTUNITIES FOR AGRIBUSINESS

Unit Objectives: By the end of this course unit participants will be able to:
1. View agriculture as a business and identify opportunities and innovations for agribusiness.
2. Identify and address some of the mindsets that hinder growth of agribusiness.
3. Describe factors that determine opportunities in agribusiness, especially for women and youths

UNIT 2: VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT

Unit objectives: By the end of this course unit participants will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of agro-chain management.
2. Examine the key priority agribusiness.
3. Formulate agribusiness strategy.
4. Apply a wide range of agribusiness practical and analytical skills to undertake value-chain analysis among common agro-based marketing chains.

UNIT 3: BUSINESS PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

Unit objectives: By the end of this course unit participants will be able to:

1) Keep records of production and business activities.
2) Examine the advantages of record-keeping.
3) Understand the importance of effective planning for a farm business.
4) Make an overview of their agribusiness and identify their business strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis).
5) Prepare the basic components of an agribusiness plan covering all aspects of their business.
6) Identify different sources for starting capital.

UNIT 4: BUSINESS LEADERSHIP

Unit objectives: By the end of this course unit participants will be able to:
1) Identify approaches to organizing agribusiness actors into cohesive groups with appropriate management structures.
2) Create and secure space for women and youth participation in agribusiness within differentially enabling socio-cultural environments.
3) Understand the spheres of influence in agribusiness and how to expand them.

UNIT 5: DIVERSITY OF ACTORS AND THEIR ROLES IN ENABLING AGRIBUSINESS

Unit objectives: By the end of this course unit participants will be able to:
1) Identify key institutions enabling agribusiness in their home country.
2) Explain the benefits of aligning chosen agribusiness to specific actors
3) Determine appropriate mechanisms and strategies for engaging other actors and sustaining relationships.

UNIT 7: ENTREPRENEURIAL INNOVATIONS IN AGRIBUSINESS

Unit objectives: By the end of this course unit participants will be able to:

1) Appreciate the role of innovations and technologies in promoting agribusiness.
2) Identify and implement innovations and appropriate technologies that promote women participation in agribusiness.
3) Influence the process of technology development to promote agribusiness.

1) Display knowledge of risk exposures and the management.
2) Describe the main steps of the risk management process.
3) Understand current issues facing the risk management in agribusiness.
