Kenyatta University has been competitively awarded a grant by the Misk Grand Challenges in its first round. There were approximately 3,000 Misk Grand Challenges proposals submitted in Round 1, with 15 awards made, one of which was our pilot project entitled Enhancing Community Food Security in Urban and Rural Areas through Outreach Youth Champions (EFSOYC). The project is funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
In pursuit of SDG 2, the Kenya Government Big Four agenda on Food Security and the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2024) priority area on Eradication of Hunger and Achieving Food Security, the project adopts an innovative and participatory approach to contribute to enhancement of food security. This pilot project will leverage on the potential of youth to drive food security efforts in their local communities by using an Outreach Youth Champions (OYC) model and existing community organization structures.
