A NEW STATE OF MATTER.

”Time  Crystal”   is   the  name  of   what  scientists  now  call  a  new  state  of  matter.  For  the  first  time  you  would  think  it  is  a  sequel  from  one  of  those  si-fi  movies  that  hollywood  has  continually  baffled  us  with  but  no  ,  it  is  as  real  as  it  sounds  fake.

This  discovery  as  they  say  would  open  new   avenues  of  research  and  for  development  of  quantum  computers  and  sensors.

Two different teams of scientists reported the discovery in the journal Nature on Wednesday. They are the first to directly create and observe time crystals, the long-theorized quantum systems that spin at their own pace independent of their environment, seemingly breaking the rules of normal timekeeping.

One team, led by the University of Maryland, used 10 levitating charged atoms, or ions, to create time crystals with the help of a complicated, colorful network of lasers and mirrors. Another team, led by Harvard University, used lasers, microwaves and black diamonds, which have special impurities the researchers were able to exploit to build the time crystals.( Daniel  Hernandez,  Wall  street  journal).

In  a  normal  ice  cube,  atoms  are  arranged  in  repeating spatial  pattern   but  in  time  crystals, patterns  repeat  in  time  instead  of  in  space.

The research is early stage, but “anytime you discover a new phase of matter, it opens doors to new theories and potential applications,” said Chetan Nayak, a principal researcher at Microsoft Station Q who wasn’t involved with the studies. Station Q is Microsoft’s quantum-computing research lab.
