Stars tackle Cordoba

Kenya coach Okumbi continues to lay building blocks for CHAN team.

SportPesa Premier League All Star will take on Spanish second division side Cordoba CF at the Estadio Antequera in Malaga in what coach Stanley Okumbi described as “laying the building blocks for CHAN team.”

Kenya will host the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in January and the national team coach is keen to put together a competitive squad for the continental event.

Today’s match and a second fixture against Seville Atletico on Saturday is part of a package of a partnership between the Kenyan Premier League and the Spanish elite football division, LaLiga.

“It is a process that will take time to actualise, but today’s match offers us a chance to lay more building blocks for the future,” Okumbi said after a training session at La Cala Golf Resort here in Malaga, Spain.

The team is led by Gor Mahia captain Musa Mohamed and backed up fellow K’Ogalo maestro Boniface Oluoch and Ulinzi Stars’ striker Samuel Onyango.

“Exposure is very important too,” said Okumbi. “The youngsters here are beginning to understand various aspects of the game such as need for concentration in training, focus on the bigger picture and the professionalism that goes with the game,” he added.

The coach said he hopes to give all the 18 teams a chance to have the feel of the top-level football.

Captain Musa said: “We are soaking in the experience. Playing against a team in Spanish second division and more so a former LaLiga team gives us an opportunity to learn more.

“Their game is at a different level and so we have to strive to learn something from them.”

Apart from Oluoch, the team also has Sofapaka goalkeeper Matthias Kigonya.

The backline of Musa Mohamed, Robinson Kamura and Simon Mbugua boast solid KPL experience.

Wesley Onguso and Maurice Ojwang should also buoy Okumbi’s side.
