Following a formal invitation from the SoE fraternity, the Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof. Olive Mugenda, together with members of University Management Board, made a spectacular unprecedented visit to the School of Education on the afternoon of Wednesday 22nd February 2012.  There was song and dance to welcome the Vice Chancellor (VC) as she entered the SoE Quadrangle. After signing the visitors’ book in the Dean’s office, and having a brief discussion with Chairpersons of Departments in the School Boardroom, the VC made a physical tour of the SoE Quadrangle, inspecting the general infrastructure and talking with staff as well as students who were studying in the vicinity. Thereafter, the VC proceeded to the Kenyatta University Conference Centre (KUCC) where the over 150 SoE academic staff members were awaiting to dialogue with her. There was brief moment of entertainment from the KUTT whose presentation aptly reflected the mood of the theme of the occasion titled; “Dialoguing for Teamwork & Greater Achievements in Quality Education services ’’. Before inviting the VC to talk to staff and share her vision of the School, the Dean, SoE, Prof. Fatuma Chege briefly outlined the issues of concern to the School and presented to the VC with a detailed memorandum that entailed the School’s vision of becoming a globally competitive hub of excellence in  university professional teacher education.
In her speech, the VC expressed appreciation for the invitation which she described as historical, adding that no School had ever invited her to their midst. The Vice Chancellor highlighted the current academic and infrastructural development that KU has made in line with the KU Strategic and Vision Plan (2005-2015). She revealed that in this Vision Plan, the SoE is among the very first Schools that would be elevated to college status, and would be called the School of Education and Lifelong Learning.  The VC went on to commend the SoE for excelling in student enrolment and completion, with the current population close to 15,000. Out of this population, approximately 1,200 are registered postgraduates (Masters and Doctoral levels). This notwithstanding, the VC also challenged the SoE to engage more in grants writing and fundraising so as to help in infrastructural and other physical developments of the University, which include the revival of Journals among other relevant activities. She encouraged the staff to venture vigorously into research activities and explore the use of modern technology in teaching and supervision, arguing that this would greatly help address the challenges of scarcity of human resource. During plenary session, members of staff responded to the VC’s speech in an open and frank manner while appreciating the honour of her visit.  The VC expressed appreciation for the invitation to dialogue and promised to study the SoE Memorandum with the aim of responding as appropriately as possible.

Inception
The department emerged from the Department of Educational Foundations of the University of Nairobi under which Kenyatta University College was a constituent college. The parent department offered diploma and degree programmes in Educational Foundations, Administration and Curriculum and once the University College attained full university status in 1985, the existence of the Department of Educational Administration, Planning and Curriculum Studies of the University of Nairobi influenced the creation of a similar department in the new university.

Management
The department has had 9 chairpersons over its 32 years of existence: Prof.J.O.OLembo (1978-1988); Dr.P.E.Wanga (1988); Dr.N.M.Karagu (1988-1992); Prof.J.G.Okech (1992-1997); Dr.G.W.Bunyi (1997-1999); Dr.G.S.Mse (1999-2003); Dr.J.M.Malusu(2003-2005);Dr.S.N.Waweru(2005- November 2010) and Dr.G.A.Onyango, the current chair.

Programmes
The department has grown from offering diploma courses from the University College’s nascent days to the provision of a wide variety of educational options. It still offers diploma in school management courses to primary school educationists. Since 1985 when Kenyatta University became a full-fledged university, the department has been offering undergraduate programmes to students in the Bachelor of Education course. It provides three options to undergraduate students in regular, institution-based (IBP) and Open and Distance and E-Learning (ODeL) programmes: Educational Administration, Educational Planning and Economics of Education, and Curriculum Studies. Numbers have grown from modest few hundreds in the 1980s to thousands since the double-intake of 1990. A variety of courses are also offered to students pursuing a post-graduate diploma in education (PGDE). The current department’s PGDE programmes were initially offered under the Department of Education Foundations but these programmes are now offered under the department. Masters programmes were initially offered on a full-time basis to a very small number which was under scholarship and those who had obtained First-Class Honours in their undergraduate studies and who were subsequently put on a staff development programme in the department. Today, the department offers both full-time and part-time programmes to hundreds of students who flock to the department for its popular, market-related programmes. The options are: Educational Management, Educational Planning, Economics of Education, and Curriculum Studies. Finally, the doctoral programme has also grown from an initial research and thesis mode offered to members of staff on university staff development programme to a recent innovation-course work, examination and thesis mode offered on full-time, part-time and school-based modes. There are currently over 50 doctoral students in the department.
The department began with a very modest number of members of teaching staff, in fact less than 10 in the 1970s. This number grew when the then University College gained full university status, after which the staff previously at the University of Nairobi moved over to boost the small number. This number has grown tremendously and the department boasts of 50 members comprised of 5 professors, 29 Ph.D holders and 19 Tutorial Fellows working on their doctorates. Many of the current members of staff have obtained their doctorates from the department: Prof.Mse, Dr. Onyango, Dr.Orodho, Dr.Malusu, Dr.Itolodo, Dr.Mary Otieno, Dr.Ogeta and most recently Dr.Ogolla.

Contribution towards growth of the University
The department is currently the largest in terms of the number of Masters and Ph.D degrees offered. Further, many of its graduates are in senior managerial positions in educational institutions in Kenya and particularly within the university system in Kenya. For example, three of its members are in senior managerial positions in the university’s central administration-Prof.Gravenir, Prof.Mse and Dr.Karagu. Other graduates in senior university managerial positions in other universities in Kenya are Prof.Shiundu at Masinde Murilo and Prof.Ogula at the Catholic University, who hold positions as Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
