Workshop on GIS Applications in Hydrology and Water Resources Management: 17 – 21 of February 2014.

The School of Engineering and Technology, Kenyatta University (KU) and the Institute of Water Management, Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering, BOKU University, Austria organized a training workshop at KU from the 17 – 21 of February 2014. The workshop was a precursor to a new project on ‘Exploring Water Resources Planning and Management Options in the Upper Mara River Basin of Kenya’ led by Dr. Luke Olang and Prof. Josef Fürst. The project is supported by the Commission for Development Research (KEF) at the OeAD-GmbH, Austria.

Participants in the GIS training course

The workshop attracted several regional stakeholders from East Africa who are concerned with applying novel geo-spatial technologies in understanding and protecting the today vulnerable river basins in the region. Proficient presentations on exploring new spatial and hydrological tools towards catchment management and pertinent decision support were made by regional experts with vast experience in the water sector.

This was a special opportunity for the School of Engineering and Technology to host this first GIS training workshop at the University. In this regard therefore, we would like to thank the Environmental Systems Research Institute East Africa –ESRI EA for their support in providing the GIS software tools used during the training. Additional information of the workshop can be obtained from the Dean, School of Engineering and Technology.
