KENYATTA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDENTS (KUNEC) S JOINS THE REST OF THE WORLD IN MARKING THE GLOBAL MARCH
This is a march celebrated all over the world to bring awareness and bring protection to some of the endangered species. More than 130 cities around the world participated in the 2016 Global March for Elephants and Rhinos. “According to experts, these marches keep political pressure on leaders to protect the world’s largest land animal.” An estimated 30 000 tons of Ivory was exported out of Africa to the United Kingdom during the reign of the British Empire. More than a million elephants were killed to provide ornaments. A hundred years later the U.K. remains the Centre of this trade. A reported 54000 pieces of ivory have been traded between 2005 and 2016.
Kenyatta University School of Environmental Studies (KUNEC) members were invited to participate in the global march celebrations that were held on Saturday, October 3, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The walk started at National Museums of Kenya to Kenya Wildlife Service HQ Kenya. Stand up Shout Out, Kenya Wildlife Service and Wildlife Direct had also invited other participants to join in the Global March for Elephants, Rhinos and Lions on Saturday the 3rd October 2016. This 10km walk will start at 9 am from the National Museums of Kenya to the Kenya Wildlife Service via Uhuru Highway and Langata road. It ended at 1pm with some entertainment until 3pm.
The students said that they were joining the rest of the world in demonstrating support for Kenya’s impressive success in combating wildlife crime through the Kenya wildlife Service anti- poaching campaign. They reiterated that their participation and support in this public demonstration against poachers, and traffickers will send a strong message to the criminals, our governments, the world and to our children, who deserve the right to enjoy the wonders of our spectacular wildlife heritage. The theme of the Kenyan Global March for Elephants and Rhinos "Justice for Elephants and Rhinos" We aim to raise awareness about the challenges facing our wildlife heritage and support government efforts in the crackdown with better law enforcement and prosecutions.

After the event the students thanked organizers of the event by Kenya Wildlife Service officials (KWS) for giving them the opportunity to be part of celebrations and joining the rest of participants globally. They thanked the University for giving them the opportunity to grace the event. The event ended at 5pm and the students headed back to the University.
