3. Linkages, Collaborations and Partnerships
- Nationally, the department has good working relationships particularly through practicum opportunities with key stakeholders involved in environmental issues and community development in the country, such as: NEMA, Kenya Wildlife Services, NGOs.
- Externally, the department is a key link of the University to the Horn of Africa Regional Environmental Network (HoA-REN).
- The department is finalising arrangements to jointly run a Masters Degree Program in Sustainable Urban Communities with United Nations University, University of Nairobi, Stellenbosch University, UNEP and UN Habitat.
4. Research: Academic Staff are involved in various research projects indicated in their individual profiles.
5. Departmental Specialisation and Branding
- The department’s specialization is: “Integrating Communities and their Environment for Sustainable Livelihoods”.
- In addition to formal employment in government, civil society and private sector, the department empowers its graduates for self employment and job creation in accordance with Kenya’s Vision 2030
6. Courses Offered
6.1. Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Community Development) Admission Criteria
- Applicants must have a mean grade of (C+) in KSCE or its equivalent with at least C+ in any three of the following subjects: Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, History and Government, Home Science and Agriculture.
- Candidates with C Plain must have a Diploma of at least Credit Pass in a field of study related to the Environment and Community Development.
- A-level candidates must have at least 2 Principals in a relevant cluster subject above
6.2. Masters of Environmental Studies (Community Development) for both Regular and Institutional-Based Programmes.
Admission Criteria Applicants must fulfil the following requirements:
- At least a Second Class Honours (Upper Second) Degree in Environmental Studies and related disciplines such as Geography, Natural Resources Management, Agricultural Sciences, Biological and Physical Sciences, Urban & Regional Planning, Development Studies from Kenyatta University or any other recognized university.
- A Lower Second Class (Lower Second) Degree in the above disciplines with at least two years of relevant experience after the first degree in areas related to Environment and Development.
6.3. PhD Studies Applicants must have a master’s degree in Environmental Studies and related areas from recognised institutions of higher learning. Admission takes place annually in September. 7. Academic Staff and their Specialisations
