Internal Links The Department of Environmental Sciences is one of four departments in the School of Environmental Studies and Human Sciences. The Department currently offers three degree programmes at bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels, namely Environmental Sciences, Environmental Resource Conservation, Environmental Education and Dryland Agriculture. The Department also offers a course, EEN 100 Environmental Education to B.Ed. students. External Links The Department of Environmental Sciences has formal links with the Regional Centre for Mapping Resources for Development (RCMRD), and is in the process of formalising links with the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI). Collaboration with the University of Glasgow for postgraduate student training is also being developed. The Department also has links with the Nile Basin Initiative, and UNEP. Research activities Postgraduate students have conducted research with their supervisors in the areas of: water pollution, air pollution, waste management, agroforestry, aquatic ecology, energy resource use, ecotourism, environmental education, soil fertility, indigenous knowledge systems, hydrology, and dryland agriculture. Staff members are carrying out research in the following broad areas: Academic Staff and Specialisations The Department of Environmental Sciences has 24 members of staff, comprising 1 Professor, 6 Associate Professors, 5 Senior Lecturers, 10 Lecturers, 2 Assistant Lecturers, and 1 Tutorial Fellow. Sixteen of the staff members are PhD holders, and the other 8 are working towards the completion of their doctoral studies. The staff members have qualifications in the following areas:
Speciality and Branding The Department of Environmental Sciences offers three unique programmes of study, Environmental Science, Environmental Resource Conservation, and Environmental Education. All our programmes have been reviewed in the last 2 years to make them issues oriented, and responsive to market demands. Our graduates find employment in environmental organisations in government and non-governmental organisations. Some opt to start up their own environmental consultancy firms. Certificate CERTIFICATE IN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT , AUDITING AND MONITORING ResourcesIn addition to the highly qualified staff, the Department has a laboratory, where some analyses of chemical and biological parameters can be done. A computer laboratory of the School, with internet access is also available to students. More specialised analyses are conducted in collaborating laboratories. Doctoral programmes are by thesis only and are normally for a duration of three years of full time study, and five years of part time study. Student Profiles Students from high school join the Department of Environmental Sciences to acquire knowledge and skills in environmental issues and challenges. They get first hand experience on environmental management, including environmental impact assessment, and environmental education. Graduates of Diploma Colleges join our programmes to upgrade their proficiency in environmental management. Practitioners of environmental management join our masters and doctoral programmes to gain knowledge and experience in conducting research on environmental issues. Student Destinations There is wide scope for employment of our graduates in the public, private, and civil society organisations. Some of our graduates have established consultancy firms, and are providers of employment themselves. |
