BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The School of Health Sciences was established in 2004 as a Centre of excellence in health research, capacity building and product development. It has rapidly developed over time and now has eleven departments that are fully established offering various degrees and diplomas. The departments are:
The department of Public Health has also expanded rapidly and is set to be launched as the School of Public Health to offer various degrees and diplomas in its various departments.
The school has modern, fully equipped Human Anatomy, Medical Physiology, Immunology, Haematology, Biochemistry laboratories, and Nursing Skills laboratory. The plan to put up a six hundred bed capacity university teaching, referral and research hospital is at a very advanced stage. This will incorporate special areas of health care including special focus on aging, cancer and gender violence recovery center and telemedicine. It will also encompass teaching of clinicians and Health researchers for the 21st century. Currently the School has a student population of approximately one thousand students taking the various courses and programmes offered by the departments in the school. These figures are projected to rise to over ten thousand in the next five years. The first group of students taking Bachelor of Science (Nursing and Public Health) graduated in December 2009 and joined various Hospitals and Health Centres for a one year internship programme and thereafter will join their colleagues in provision of health care. The first group of MBChB students graduate in December 2010 and are already in various hospitals undertaking their internship programmes

- Bachelor of Science (Health Records and Information Management)
- Bachelor of Science (Medical Laboratory Science)
- Master of Public Health
- MSc. (Occupational Safety and Health)
- MSc. (Environmental Health)
- Master of Public Health (Biomedical Statistics)
- MSc. (Disaster Management)
- Master of Health Management
- Master of Health Project Management)
- MSc. (Health Information Management)
- MSc. (Public Reproductive Health)
- Master of Public Health (Community Health Nutrition)
- Master of Epidemiology and Disease Control
- Master of Science in Gender Health
- Master of Science in Population Health
Doctoral programmes for most of the above courses are also available
Plans are already at an advanced stage to offer the following degree programmes in the next academic year:
- Bachelor of Science in Natural Medicine
- Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy
- Master of Health Management
RATIONALE The School of Health Sciences stands unique from any other already established school in that apart from providing training facilities for Health personnel, it is also involved research for novel drug discovery and general improvement of Health care for the nation as captured below: The millennium Development Goals all support Health related issues like safe motherhood and environmental health hence the importance of investing in Health, introduction of free primary education; leading to increased demand for higher education hence need to expand university programmes. The current upsurge in the prevalence and incidence of emerging and re-emerging human infectious diseases necessitates the need to consider and refocus capacity building programmes for health care providers. The School of Health Sciences will generate funds for the university from fees paid and other services provided as the financial source of development and expansion With the establishment of the Hospital, the medical expenses for the university staff and students will be drastically reduced.
