Linkages PDF 

The School of Health Sciences is in collaboration and linkage with several local and international institutions of learning of repute for faculty exchanges, research and training. Some of the institutions the school is collaborating with include Aga Khan University to in capacity building and to establish links in areas of distance learning, Machakos General Hospital for clinical Placements the University of Florida in areas of pharmacy and Complementary Medicine. Others are the University of Iowa, Tokushukai Medical Corporation in Japan and many others.

Department of Nursing Sciences

1. Agakhan University, Makerere University and Zanzibar College, University of Nottingham and Kenyatta University, Department of Nursing Sciences: sponsored by the European Union and WHO.

a. The collaboration/linkage is in phases of 3 years. We are in the first phase.

b. Objectives:

    • To improve on Nursing/Midwifery Education in the African Region.
    • To work together and develop a masters programme in Nursing which can be used in all the concerned universities.
    • To start short term courses in nursing education for employed nurses.

c. Meetings and Conferences are already taking place. The modules for the masters programme in specialties such as Administration, Paediatrics, Community Health, Psychiatry and Nursing Education are being prepared by the different institutions which they will put together.

2. We have collaborations through the Ministry of Health with a number of hospitals where we take our BSc Nursing students for clinical teaching/placements. We usually get approval from the Director of Medical Services Office. These include:

a. Kiambu District Hospital.

b. Thika District Hospital.

c. Nyeri Provincial Hospital.

d. Embu Provincial Hospital.

3. Pumwani Hospital through the Medical Superintendent Office and Nazareth Hospital.

There are others which are in the making and we will keep you posted once we are through.

Department of Public Health

Research Activities
Our students and staff have been actively engaged in research in various areas, including the broad areas of HIV/AIDS, Epidemiology, Disaster Management, Health Management Information Systems, Environmental Health, Family Health and Reproductive Health. Staff members are currently carrying out research in the following areas:

  • Costing of health services.
  • Ethical issues in Anti Retroviral Therapy.
  • Environmental Management of Lake Victoria Basin.
  • HIV/AIDS Reproductive health nexus.
