INTRODUCTION
Kenya has been having only one institution training Pharmacists at degree level since attaining independence. To date, Kenya has graduated about 1000 Pharmacists since 1978. Although the total number of registered Pharmacists in Kenya is about 2000, the country requires an additional 6000 Pharmacists to serve in the public and private sector.
The Department of Pharmacy and Complementary/ Alternative Medicine was established in April 2005 within the School of Health Sciences. The first batch of BPharm students registered in January 2009. The department is responsible for the training of professional Pharmacists and Natural Medical Practitioners both at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, to meet the needs of the country. These graduates will be serving in various positions in hospitals, industry, retail, research establishments and academia.
The department will have four sections namely Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, and Pharmacognosy and Complementary/Alternative Medicine.
These sections will be semi-autonomous units, teaching the different disciplines within the Pharmacy profession. The department will offer service courses to other departments within the School of Health Sciences and the rest of the university.
MISSION
To generate and disseminate knowledge through teaching and research on all areas of allopathic and alternative health care systems for a healthier and wealthier world.
VISION
To be a multidisciplinary center of excellence in health research, capacity building, biodiversity conservation, drug discovery and development through research.
OBJECTIVE
To train a professional who:
- Is capable of stimulating and sustaining the country’s natural system of medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.
- Is competent in communicating and making judgment in all matters pertaining to drugs.
- Will fully participate in treatment of diseases, alleviation and prevention of suffering.
- Will help to formulate and sustain national policies with respect to the production, preservation, quality control and safe use of drugs.
ACCREDITATION
The Pharmacy degree course is accredited by Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.

Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and a subsidiary pass In Physics or Mathematics
