Introduction
The Department of Kiswahili and African Languages became autonomous in 1987, when the Department of Linguistics and African Languages was split into three departments namely: Department of Kiswahili and African Languages, Department of Foreign Languages and Department of English.

Location
We are located along Kahawa Road, adjacent to Literature and English departments behind Kenyatta University Shopping Centre and opposite the University Chapel.

Department's Specialty and Branding
Our department is one of the largest Kiswahili and African Languages Department in the region offering outstanding and varied courses in Language, Linguistics, African Languages, Literature, Theatre Arts and Translation.
Undergraduate Students
As a B.A. student you can choose a mode that suits your requirements, as a B.Ed. student you are required to take a minimum of 15 units which include 10 core units. We assess our students through course work and examination.

Postgraduate Research and Taught Students
Our M.A. programme takes two academic years (three semesters of course work and examination and one semester of project). Students may choose to write a thesis only during the second year of their study. The full time Ph.D duration is three years while part time takes up to six years.

Resources
We have a good collection of books, journals and theses at the resource room. We also facilitate students' access to a language laboratory for those who would like to specialise in linguistics.

Upon graduation, our students find career opportunities in Teaching, Education, Publishing, Research, Administration, Business, Journalism, Communication and Information Technology,Translation and Interpretation and others including self – employment.
