Department of Sociology
Entry requirements
Bachelor of Arts Programme has a university entry requirement of a C+ in the KCSE examinations and for one to do sociology as one of the subjects in the BA programme, there is a departmental requirement of at least a C+ in Mathematics at KCSE. The MA (Sociology) – the requirements are that the applicant should be a holder of a Bachelor of Arts degree of Kenyatta University or any other university with at least an upper second class honours and has studied sociology as either a major of regular subject at degree level of equivalent qualifications from a recognized University. A holder of a lower second class degree may be admitted provided the candidate can show proven evidence of research ability. MA (Community Development) - the applicant should be a holder of a bachelors degree in sociology with at least upper second class honours (either as a major or a regular) or its equivalent from Kenyatta University or any other recognized university; or a holder of a lower second-class bachelors degree in sociology from Kenyatta university or any other recognised university, plus at least three years of relevant experience in community development (including evidence of research ability). PhD in Sociology - the applicant should be a holder of a Masters in Sociology or related subject. In addition, applicants should have: proven research ability; coverage of advanced research methods and sociological theory. Those holding a masters degree by thesis will have an added advantage. A holder of an M.Phil in sociology will only be considered if he/she has 2 years relevant research experience. Diploma in Crime Management and Prevention - Any diploma or degree holder from a recognized Institution of Higher Learning; A’ Level or K.A.C.E. and its equivalent; Minimum grade C (plain) at K.C.S.E. or Division 3 at K.C.E. or its equivalent; Holders of a certificate in Crime Management and Prevention from recognized institutions with relevant work experience of 2 years and above. Diploma in Disaster Management - Any diploma or degree holder from a recognized Institution of Higher Learning; Holders of ‘A’ Level/K.A.C.E. and its equivalent; Minimum grade C (plain) at K.C.S.E. or Division 3 at K.C.E. or its equivalent, and holders of a certificate in Disaster Management from recognized institutions with relevant work experience of two years and above.
Master of Arts (Sociology)
This is a course, examination and this programme. The course exposes students to theory and practice of sociology. Students do one year of course work and write a research thesis during the second year of study. Master of Arts (Community Development) This programme offers three semesters of course work and one semester of research project work. The course grounds students in the theory and practice of community development. PhD (Sociology) The department offers this course by research and thesis only. There are plans to introduce coursework in the programme. Study Mode and Duration The courses are available for full time and part time students and also through open learning. The modes of delivery include lectures, tutorials, seminars, projects/dissertations and theses. For open learning students, modules written by specialists in the various areas are available. Our degree courses take 4 academic years while diploma courses take 4 semesters. However BA students who take a trimester may complete their studies within three calendar years. Postgraduate Intake A number of students are currently registered for the Ph. D. programme in the areas of Hydrology and Water Resources, Tourism, Population Studies, Urban and Regional Planning and Medical Geography and Transport Geography. Some Masters students are in the areas of Biogeography, Climatology, Urban development, Medical Geography, Agricultural Geography , Transport and Hydrology and Water Resources. A new Masters Programme in Integrated Watershed Management has started in the Department. Units/Areas of Study The postgraduate units/areas of study include; MSc. Hydrology and Water Resources, Biogeography, Medical Geography, Climatology, Geomorphology, Transport Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Geography of Marketing, Population and Settlement Geography and Integrated Watershed Management Study Mode and Duration The Department offers postgraduate programmes at Masters and Doctoral levels. M.Sc. and M.A. programmes are designed to take a maximum of 2 years while the Ph.D. programmes take a minimum of 3 years. The MSc and MA degrees consist of coursework, examination and thesis, while Ph.D. is by thesis only. Department of Foreign Languages |
