We are part of the School of Pure and Applied Sciences. We offer units to students from School of Education and School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Our programmes are multidisciplinary and will offer you opportunity to take units in other departments such as Physics, Chemistry and ICT. External Links We have an active link with Iowa State University (USA). In the last six years we have had two of our members obtain their Ph.D. degrees from there under this link and we are expecting one other member to graduate soon and join us in the department. Prospective students and staff on training stand to benefit from this through staff /students exchange. We have also forged a link with the Applied Mathematics department of the University of Limpopo in South Africa through which we intend to have our students registered for Ph.D. programme and co- supervised by professors from there. Research Activities We are basically in three fields of study namely, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics. In Pure Mathematics you will be able to carry out fruitful research in Group theory, Loop theory and Topology. In Applied Mathematics you will carry out research in Dynamical systems, Normal forms and Numerical simulations. In Statistics you will be able to carry out your research in: Sample surveys, Non-parametric density and regression estimation, Life testing and reliability. Academic Staff And Specialisation In the Department of Mathematics you will be taught by a team of qualified and committed staff of 18. The staff members have higher qualifications in the following areas:
In the department you will be able to access reference books maintained in thedepartmental library. In the same library you will access projects and theses which have been written over the years by our post graduate students. Student Profile As a gateway to many technological rewarding careers such as ICT, the demand for courses in mathematics has been on a steady rise. Mathematics has led many of our graduates to high profile jobs in scientific research, business, teaching and many other careers where mathematical reasoning is required. Student Destinations If you acquire a strong Mathematics back ground you are likely to get a career as a management trainee in a bank and insurance companies where you end up as a manager and you can extend your career to be an actuary upon registering with the relevant professional Institutes. There is still a great demand for mathematics teachers in Secondary and post Secondary Institutions in Kenya and the entire Eastern and Southern region of Africa. Of late mathematics teachers from this department have found ready opportunities in Mozambique and Seychelles as graduate mathematics teachers. In some instances we have had demand for our graduates in the U.S. to be recruited to teach in their high schools. |
