Camp Shriver Coach Training held at Kenyatta University
Special Olympics club at Kenyatta University held an event management course for 32 volunteer soccer and basketball coaches. The event management course was in preparation for the forthcoming Camp Shriver sports camp to be held from 30th November to 11th December 2009. The volunteer coaches were selected from the students from the departments of Physical education and sports science. All those selected for the course were expected to be conversant with the rules of the two sports. The official opening of the workshop was presided over by the Dean of the School of Applied Human Sciences Prof. Keren Mburugu. She praised the students for volunteering to support the needy in society. Many of the students confessed this was going to be the first time they were volunteering to work with people with intellectual disabilities. They however were confident that they will be able to teach after going through the course.
The programme was organized by Mr. Peter Bukhala the 2009 Eunice Kennedy Shriver fellow as part of his project which is to establish a Camp Shriver sports camp at Kenyatta university..
The facilitators of the course were drawn from the university sports department. Mr. Vince Ombiji the soccer coach, is a well known internationally trained coach and now the university soccer head coach while Mr. Gitau Waringo is the University Basketball head coach. Dr. Onywera a sports scientist in the department of exercise science provided the needed guidance in the assessment of fitness components.
The closing ceremony was attended by many invited guests who included the entire Special Olympic Kenya office led by Mr. Joe Mutua. He implored the coaches to be true to the oath and to know that their role was to change lives. Mr. Joshua Agare the International Global Messenger praised the coaches for volunteering to teach the athletes skills.
The chief guest for the closing ceremony was Mr. Patrick Naggi the Football Kenya Limited Technical Director . He was happy with what the university was doing to improve the training capacity of young coaches. He praised Special Olympics for initiating the programme. He promised to inform FIFA through on the need for support people with disabilities to master the game of football. He promised to donate ten footballs for the camp Shriver project and help to seek more from other sources.
