There is an increasing awareness of the role and potential of artists in the socio-economic development of our country. Artists and Designers play a major role in creating social awareness through visual communication. This is in line with Kenya’s goal of industrial transformation by the year 2030. A country with no dreamers who are creative and innovative does not develop technologically or otherwise. Persons from a tender age are imaginative, creative and innovative thinkers; qualities that have to be nurtured to fruition at adulthood regardless of the profession chosen. There is therefore a need to develop a Art and Design curriculum that is relevant to the needs of society. The Department of Art and Design has therefore revised its courses with a view to offering a curriculum that embraces changing technology and responds to the market dynamics and stiff competition.
Rationale Art and Design is one of the key areas of study that nurtures creativity, imagination and innovativeness. These are qualities that are important in professions such as education, medicine, science, entrepreneurship, and engineering to mention but a few. The Art and Design curriculum offers courses relevant to the needs of society through embracing changing technology and responding to the market dynamics and competition. Vision The Vision of the Department of Art and Design is to excel in the training of Art and Design by fostering creativity, research, and art practice. Mission The Department’s mission is to achieve the highest standards of academic excellence in teaching, learning, and research by preparing students and staff to realize their potential and make a positive contribution to society.
