Celebrating 25 Years of Global GIS Day at Kenyatta University: Mapping Minds, Shaping the World
On November 20th, 2024, the world will come together to celebrate GIS Day the 25th time globally, recognizing the contributions and achievements of GIS professionals in promoting resource access and utilization. This year’s theme, "Mapping Minds, Shaping the World," continues the tradition of highlighting the transformative power of GIS.
Since 2013, Kenyatta University has used GIS Day as a powerful platform to inspire students by showcasing the impact of GIS in developing solutions. This led to the students forming a GIS Club the Kenyatta University GIS Club, KUGIS in 2018 and which has been steering the organization and celebration of GIS Day since then. This is year the KUGIS club membership in a pre-GIS Day 2024 celebration activity will map all Kenyatta University services utilities and facilities on an open-source location mapping platform for quick access to both the students and visitors to the university. This is in line with our rallying call of SEE & MAP IT AS IS, THEN?.... GIS Day 2024 presents an incredible opportunity to share the remarkable power of understanding “What, Where, When and How”.
We as the KUGIS club continue to experience the power of effective partnerships. We had a follow-up on last years GIS-Day 2023 celebration with visits and lectures from The Institute of Conscious Global Change on geodesign with and by communities, CIFOR-ICRAF on issues of climate change and carbon footprints, IGAD-ICPAC on DUNIA hackathon, Digital Globe Africa on the SAND BOX and land degradation, OSM and Kenya Red Cross on a Mapathon on floods and schools in Narok County. ESRI-EA with continued support of the ARCGIS Online platform. This is along with our membership participating in Afrigeo Symposium and the RIC-2024 at RCMRD. We express our gratitude to these institutions.
Under this year’s theme, "Mapping Minds, Shaping the World," we look forward to our memberships showcasing what they have done over the year including the presentation on the services and utilities open-source map of KU. We invite the various spatial knowledge communities to join us in sharing their experiences in the spatial space and where our staff and students can leverage and to also witness KU students are doing and how GIS is enabling them to access and utilize resources in their respective research areas of interest.
