Essential Grant Writing Skills Workshop – October / November 2022

The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) works to strengthen the health research capacity of scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa who are engaged in tackling the sub-region’s significant health challenges. AREF is calling for applications from scientists who are active, emerging biomedical/health researchers in Sub-Saharan African countries to participate in its Essential Skills for Grant Writing Programme.

Mode and Dates

This fully on-line programme will be held on the following dates;

Awards of USD $5,000 each are available to two innovative African scientists, extension specialists, or educators. The Fellowship will support education, training, and communication programs relevant to improving the use and efficiency of plant nutrients in African agro-ecosystems.

Eligibility

  1. Scientists, extension specialists or educators working at an African NARES institution (National Agricultural Research and Extension System), African university, nonprofit organization, or in the private sector are eligible for the African Plant Nutrition Outreach Fellowship.
  2. Applicants are encouraged to submit creative proposals addressing knowledge gaps or needed synthesis of existing information for accelerating the delivery and adoption of improved nutrient stewardship in Africa. Applicants should indicate how the award will be used (such as to support travel, communication outreach, or training activities).
  3. Evidence of partnerships and collaboration will be favourably reviewed. Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

  1. INTERNATIONAL BRAIN ORGANIZATION -A focus on low-cost, state-of-the-art research tools and models

The objective of the course is to teach how low –cost, state of the art research tools and models can be employed in a low resource setting using open-source software and hardware to build lab equipment .Emphasis will be on the importance of good scientific conduct, project design, management and scientific communication

This course aims to introduce key concepts of Open Science and Neuroscience, both theoretically and importantly through experiments. The course is divided into two parts.  The first part will teach general concepts of Open Science in the lab, from open hardware and software to how to generate your own experimental reagents. This will not only make your science more open and reproducible but will make it more cost-effective.

The second part of the course will perform neuroscience research using three model organisms that are inexpensive and enable a wide range of experimental approaches thanks to their genetic accessibility, namely: Drosophila, zebrafish, and C. elengas. Subjects covered will range from programming, open source hardware projects, lab maintenance, behavioral and electrophysiological research techniques.

No attendance fee will be charged; nonetheless the organizers expect you to give a talk at your department about the workshop content and the organization.

Funding

The fellowships consist of a grant of € 1000 + one return flight ticket, for a minimum stay of two weeks, which is meant to cover (or contribute towards) travel and accommodation costs and living expenses. The visiting scholars will be given an office space and access to facilities (such as the library) as a Ghent University visiting scholar.

The fellowships can be taken up at any time in 2023. Awardees are expected to be present at Ghent University and to take part in the academic activities of the research unit.

Visiting scholars will give at least one lecture or seminar to fellow researchers and students. For this reason, awardees are required to have an excellent command of English or French.

The Neuropsychiatry Faculty has established an annual bursary to enable a psychiatrist from a low- and middle-income (LAMI) country (defined as World Bank classification C and D) to attend the Faculty Annual Residential Meeting (usually held in September) in order to give an oral or poster presentation or deliver a workshop.
