Funding is basically reserved for projects that are related to the promotion areas of the Foundation and have a clear connection to the German research system. This connection can be established either at a personal level through German scientists working on the project, at an institutional level through non-German scientists being affiliated to German research institutes or through studies on topics related thematically to German research interests. Innovative food from marine and freshwater ecosystems

European Commission

Despite the vast diversity of biota in the European seas, rivers and lakes, consumers prefer only a few species for consumption. This is even more pronounced for aquaculture production where only a very limited number of fish and shellfish species are farmed. Moreover, some of the farmed species are higher predators and, despite improvements in feeds, fishing for feed is still a sad reality. Waste of seafood during production, processing, transport, and consumption is massive; valorization of fish and shellfish biomass is still far from achieving its full potential in the context of a circular economy. Innovation under this topic should explore and test solutions for more sustainable fishing and/or aquaculture practices and diversify production through low trophic level fisheries and/or aquaculture. This could include animals (herbivorous, filter-feeders), algae (micro- and macro-), bacteria and fungi. Issues of biology, feeding, metabolism, disease, pathology, environmental sustainability, gear technology, processing, and marketing of products may be addressed. The projects that will be selected may also address issues of proximity between seafood production and consumption, e.g. by exploring possibilities to turn artisanal fisheries more environmentally friendly and economically viable. Innovative processing possibilities may also be explored. The award value is EUR 18 000 000.

Proteins from alternative and unconventional sources

European Commission

The growing world population requires an increase in affordable protein supply. However, this cannot be realized by depleting limited natural resources (land, water, nutrients, etc.), which are already under strong pressure globally and in the EU. Today’s largest source of protein for human consumption is based on farm animals, which often involves multiple sustainability issues. Moreover, low-grade or specialty proteins not suitable for food or feed applications could serve as feedstock for the bio-based industry. However, the extraction and purification of such streams are difficult, especially from unconventional sources. Europe needs to diversify protein sources to decrease its dependence on imports and the environmental footprint often associated with animal-based proteins. In line with the Farm to Fork strategy for a fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly food system and the European Green Deal priorities, successful proposals will support the mobilization of proteins for food, feed, and non-food bio-based applications.

Agroecological approaches for sustainable weed management

European Commission

A successful proposal should support the farm to fork’s strategy objective of a transition to a fair, healthy and resilient European agriculture, notably its objective to promote agroecology, and the target to reduce the overall use and risk of chemical pesticides, by unfolding the potential of agroecology to provide alternative weeding strategies that reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides used as herbicides. This will support the transition to sustainable, safe, productive, climate-neutral and resilient farming systems that minimise the pressure on ecosystems while ensuring fair economic returns for farmers. Herbicides have become the foundation of weed management in EU farming systems. Given that herbicides can have harmful effects on the environment, non-target organisms, and animal and human health, reducing reliance on these products has become a policy objective. Sustainable and effective non-chemical alternatives to reduce or eliminate the use of herbicides are largely lacking for most crops and farming systems in the EU. Weed-related challenges can be better addressed as a part of broad-based, holistic strategies such as agroecology that, by relying on and maximising the use of ecological processes to support agricultural production, have the potential to advance ecosystem sustainability while ensuring profitability of the farming activity. Agroecology is a holistic approach that relies on and maximises the use of ecological processes to support agricultural production. By working more with nature and ecosystem services, agroecology has the potential to increase the circularity, diversification and autonomy of farms, and drive a full transformation of farming systems, from input substitution and beyond. In parallel, progressing towards digitalisation or the implementation of new digital technologies is one of the main ambitions facing EU agriculture. The award value is EUR 14 500 000.

Emerging and future risks to plant health

European Commission

Proposals should target one or more new or emerging plant pests (regulated, non-regulated, introduced or native) that are causing or likely to cause, significant (socio) economic and/or environmental losses to agriculture and/or forestry in the EU and/or Associated Countries. Within the scope of this topic are pests exhibiting an altered and higher probability of entry and spread in a new area that might be the result of changes in their biology or changes in agriculture or forestry pest management practice or rapid spread in new areas. The choice of target pest(s) should consider the potential threat in terms of development and spread, its potential exacerbation under climate change as well as the potential impact on agricultural production, forestry, trade and the wider environment (including soil and water). Activities should consider both the conventional and the organic sectors. The award value is EUR 7 000 000.

Ecology of infectious animal diseases

European Commission

The emergence, persistence and spread of diseases is the result of a number of factors linked to the dynamic biological or ecological interplay among and between the infectious agents, the hosts (intermediary or definitive), the community of hosts (intermediary or definitive, including wildlife), vectors in the case of vector-borne diseases, the environment, including other living organisms found in agro-ecosystems, and human activity. Understanding this interplay, at various spatial scales (herd, farm, landscape), in particular the capacity of infectious agents, vectors or hosts to persist in different agro-ecosystems, to circulate between them, or to evolve and potentially become more pathogenic or jump between species is often incomplete for known diseases, and virtually non-existent for new diseases, like the emergence of Coronavirus infections highlighted. The award value is EUR 12 000 000.

Alternative sources for high added value food and/or feed ingredients

European Commission

In line with the Farm to Fork strategy for a fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly food system, biodiversity strategy, and the European Green Deal priorities, successful proposals will support the large-scale production of high-value food and or feed ingredients from alternative sustainable sources (excluding animal sources), without impacting or regenerating local biodiversity and ecosystems. Europe needs to increase its strategic autonomy by diversifying sources of sustainable food ingredients (including proteins). Promoting healthier or more sustainable foods is gaining ground among European consumers. Since the introduction of the first Novel Food Regulation in 1997, consumers have witnessed a growing number of novel foods and food ingredients introduced on the market, e.g., based on new crops or algae, to name a few. Additional effort is required to support this trend and bring more products to the market, while ensuring their high environmental sustainability, as confirmed by the life cycle assessment, as well as guaranteeing the high quality for the consumers (including toxicological safety, high nutritional performance, taste, and texture, technological functionality, etc.). Even more importantly, novel ingredients require the development of new value chains, and attention to issues such as production costs, food safety, scalability, and consumer acceptance. Furthermore, positive environmental impacts cannot be taken for granted with novel ingredient sources, and care must be taken to ensure that comparisons between novel and existing sources are valid.

Call for Proposals: Innovation within Green Chemistry

Merck Foundation

Science and technology are at the heart of everything people do on earth, driving innovations that enable people to contribute to a sustainable future. In this endeavor, Merck group is seeking research proposals in the field of green chemistry. Progress is currently made e.g. in the field of catalysts, prevention of waste and emissions, renewable feed stocks, use of AI for the design for reactions with more efficient synthesis. Merck is a science-driven organization and conducts its business in healthcare, life science and electronics.

Eligibility

Research proposal should find an application in one of the three sectors: healthcare, life science and electronics. The proposal should include a Proof of concept (Technology Readiness Level 3)
Description of the innovativeness of the proposal and the potential impact on Merck should also be included.
Applications are accepted from accross the globe.

This grant comprises of 100,000 € for one year with potential for further collaboration. Submission deadline is 31 August 2022.

Life sciences and their convergence with digital technologies for prospecting, understanding and sustainably using biological resources

European Commission

Engineering biology applications have grown beyond chemical production to include the generation of biosensor organisms for the lab, animal, and field, modification of agricultural organisms for nutrition and pest/environmental resilience, production of organisms for bioremediation, and live-cell and gene/viral therapies. The rapid expansion of the field has resulted in new tools and new approaches. However, we are still challenged by the need for novel and more robust and interoperable computational tools and models for engineering biology. For example, improved models of synthetic systems (synthetic biology) and of their interaction with their host organisms could help enable more successful engineering. The topic aims to prevent pollution and sustainably manage and use natural resources within safe planetary boundaries, including in the deployment of the bioeconomy and the bio-based sectors. The proposals should enable prospecting, understanding and sustainable use of biological resources based on their convergence with digital technologies that lead to optimised and more efficient bio-based operations. The award value is EUR 12 000 000.

Nominations for the 2022 Al-Sumait Prize in Food Security.

Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS)

The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) is now accepting nominations for the 2022 Al-Sumait Prize in Food Security. The prize is to be awarded to individuals or institutions who through their research projects or initiatives have made significant advancement within the following areas:

Developing new varieties of seeds, crops or livestock which can improve the food security and nutrition in Africa.
Increasing the shelf life, calorific and nutritional value of food produced and consumed domestically.
Improving smallholder farmers’ access to agricultural inputs, techniques, technologies and markets to increase the availability of nutritious products, which are highly needed to improve the diet of the most vulnerable people living and making their livelihoods from the most marginal areas in Africa.
Improving farmers’ resilience to climate change and extreme weather variability to ensure sustainable livelihoods, food security and nutrition.
Reducing significantly the food waste and food loss in the African continent agrifood systems.
Developing new alternative agrifood systems, increasing both productivity while reducing the water footprint, particularly in the marginal environments of the continent.
Improving marketing, digitalization and adoption of modern business strategies in the field of food security and nutrition.
Providing innovative and sustainable solutions in combating food insecurity and malnutrition in the African continent.

Eligibility

The nominated candidates’ research and development work or projects and initiatives must be innovative and have achieved high-impact in the African continent.
The submitted work must be of paramount importance in promoting significant economic, social, human resources and infrastructure development within the announced field of the
Submitted research work of a nominated candidate should be composed of studies and applied research, published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and recognized at a global level within the announced field. The research outcomes need to have been applied after publication in African countries within the past ten Adequate supporting evidence needs to be provided.
Nominations are accepted from competent regional and international institutions and scientific centers (universities, institutes and centers of scientific research) as well as from UN organizations, former winners in the field of the prize, or former evaluation
All submissions must be submitted in English. If the work is carried out is in other languages, a comprehensive summary of the nominated work in English must be submitted.

The prize is awarded annually within one of three fields – Food Security, Health and Education – and has a value of $1,000,000 (One million US dollars). The nomination deadline is 30th July 2022.

Photosynthesis revisited: climate emergency, “no pollution and zero-emission” challenge and industrial application

European Commission

The photosynthetic capacity of plants, algae, and other photosynthetic organisms to assimilate atmospheric carbon dioxide positions them at the center of the global climate change adaptation and mitigation challenges. Their autotrophic lifestyle also makes them ideal platform organisms for sustainable production of biomolecules, including molecules of high socio-economic value, of interest to diverse industrial sectors, by increasingly sophisticated synthetic and molecular biology approaches. This creates new opportunities for industrial production, beyond improved yields, while helping increase CO₂ assimilation capacity - contributing notably to the reduction of pollution in Europe, and making it more efficient. In particular, recent research confirms a strong correlation between plant physiological reactions during drought and heatwaves, which are increasing in frequency and intensity in Europe, notably by contributing to ozone pollution, the so-called ‘climate penalty of plants”. The successful proposal will contribute to Destination ‘Circular economy and bioeconomy sectors’ impacts, and the European policies it supports, in particular the European Green Deal, the circular economy action plan, and the bioeconomy strategy. They will help improve European industrial sustainability, competitiveness, and resource independence to develop innovative bio-based products. They will engage all stakeholders and improve their knowledge and understanding of science, notably of biotechnology-based value chains, and improve benefits for consumers. The award value is EUR 6 000 000.

Call for Application for PhD Thesis Research on Human Capital Development Grant Support 2022/2023

African Economic Research Consortium (AERC)

The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) was established in 1988 as a public not-for-profit organization devoted to the advancement of economic policy research and training in Africa. The Consortium’s mandate and strategic intent is built on the basis that sustained development in sub-Saharan Africa require well-trained, locally based professional economists. AERC agitates the provision of capacity building in economic policy in Francophone and Anglophone African countries through the provision of support in the areas of policy research and graduate training. AERC wishes to announce the 2022/2023 Ph.D. thesis research grant support to African graduate students registered in a PhD degree programme in Economics at institutions within or outside Africa. The support will be specific to students whose thesis research proposal is on human capital development in Africa. Research could also be targeted at a country or region.

Eligibility

Graduate students are eligible to apply for this award provided:

They are African graduate students registered in a doctoral degree program in Economics at a recognized university either within or outside Africa;
They have completed all course requirements for the degree;
They have successfully defended their proposals and they are in the writing phase of the dissertation
They have not received any other funding to support these dissertation activities outlined in the PhD proposal/budget

Better understanding the influence of organizational cultures and human interactions in the forensic context as well as a common lexicon

European Commission

Security research projects related to forensics typically focus only on technologies and data, while the process by which forensic experts evaluate and interpret the evidence is often put aside. However, cognitive methods and human judgment play a significant role as forensic experts observe and interpret the data. By doing this, forensic experts are almost inevitably exposed to irrelevant contextual information (such as suspect’s criminal record or ethnicity, a type of information that can be obtained due to a liaison between a forensic expert and investigators, police, and the prosecution), which can potentially cause bias. In contexts where digital technologies are involved in creating forensic outcomes, biases and loss of transparency can also arise from different roles and disciplinary backgrounds of the different actors working on and with the digital tools. European context, a critical enabler for improved collaboration and communication between forensic practitioners is the use of a clear, consistent vocabulary. Such a shared vocabulary would, among others, allow for a common understanding of forensics, improve structured (cross-border) data sharing, and amplify the (cross-border) acceptance of evidence in court. There is hence a need for development of a common lexicon, able to adapt to the evolving aspect of forensic technologies. The award value Is EUR 3 000 000.

Call for Exploratory Comparative Research Project

Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF)

The Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) is an independent foundation that inspires, initiates, and supports research and educational activities that can contribute to new knowledge on broad issues related to urban mobility and access. VREF invites applications for research grants to support projects that will be implemented in 2022 under the VREF program “Mobility and Access in African Cities” (MAC). This Call is the third one of the MAC program, following earlier calls in 2019 and 2020. Mobility and Access in African Cities (MAC) is a VREF-funded initiative with the purpose of increasing the knowledge and capacity based on equitable and sustainable mobility and access in cities in sub-Saharan Africa. The MAC program seeks to contribute to forming a new generation of highly skilled sub-Saharan university researchers and teachers, as well as to engage professionals, policymakers, and actors within civil society who are committed to achieving goals of sustainable and equitable urban mobility and access. Leading international experts can also contribute to the program through collaborative research projects with their sub-Saharan African counterparts.VREF foresees that successful research proposals will approach these areas through cross-disciplinary approaches that link perspectives and approaches from multiple disciplines or areas, e.g. engineering, social sciences, behavioral sciences, and the humanities

Eligibility

Sub-Saharan university-based researchers who have expertise in sustainable and equitable mobility and access in sub-Saharan African cities;
Sub-Saharan university-based researchers who have not previously engaged in transport-related research but who have expertise that could fruitfully be applied to these areas;
Sub-Saharan university-based researchers with strong interests in carrying out interdisciplinary research that can contribute to new knowledge and insights on issues related to sustainable and equitable mobility and access
Projects must include comparative work from urban areas in at least two sub-Saharan African countries;
The project leader must be based in a research environment at a university in sub-Saharan Africa;
The project team must consist of researchers from at least two different universities in subSaharan Africa (other partners, such as cities, organizations from civil society or NGOs may also be included
Projects should engage young scholars (within five years after Ph.D.) and reflect gender balance in the research team;

The total budget for this Call is 4 million Swedish crowns (approx. 370,000 Euros). VREF envisages supporting up to eight projects, each with a grant of up to 500,000 Swedish crowns (approx. 46,500 Euros). The project grant can be used to cover costs for salaries, travel, equipment, possible workshops/project meetings, and other costs directly linked to project implementation. The grant should be shared between two or more universities/research environments in such a way that one university/research environment will not receive more than 60% of the total grant.

Creating a sustainable clinical trial network for infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa

European Commission

The work carried out on this topic should lay the foundation for the establishment of a pan sub-Saharan African infrastructure of clinical trial facilities that continuously evaluate health interventions (incl. vaccines, treatments, and diagnostics) for infectious diseases in a coordinated, harmonized manner to maximize trial efficiency. The purpose of this topic is to support one project which will carry out a desk review and mapping exercise of the current landscape of clinical trial and laboratory networks in sub-Saharan Africa. Such an exercise would provide the basis for the creation of the intended network. The network could be composed of regional networks in Sub-Saharan Africa, each regional network with its connected clinical trial sites and laboratories. The structure to be built needs to ensure a harmonized approach to clinical trial implementation. Relevant regional and international organizations, such as the World Health Organization - Regional Office for Africa, the African Medicines Agency (AMA), or the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), should be consulted when developing the plans for the future network.

Digital solutions for defining synergies in international renewable energy value chains

European Commission

The European Commission’s scope according to this call is now on the development of novel real-time and open data monitoring and/or simulation solutions (e.g. including digital twins) for sustainable energy production and consumption, predictive modeling, and artificial intelligence for the analysis of international renewable energy value chains and for internationally aligned decision-making in cooperation with international partners from Mission Innovation Countries. To ensure trustworthiness, wide adoption by user communities, and support EU policy-makers, actions should promote the highest standards of transparency and openness, going well beyond documentation and extending to aspects such as assumptions, models, and data related to renewable energy and fuels.

The call is expected to;

Advance the European and global scientific basis, European leadership, and global role in the area of renewable energy and renewable fuels and related energy value chains while creating evidence for policymaking by developing novel digital solutions.
Provide digital breakthrough solutions for promoting the increase of the global renewable energy share.
Reinforce the European scientific basis through international collaboration while increasing the potential to export European renewable energy technologies and ensuring political priorities in the context of sustainable global energy value chains.

Energy Catalyst Round 9 - Late Stage

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will work with the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as part of the Ayrton Fund to invest up to £20 million in innovation projects. The aim of this competition is to accelerate the innovations needed to create new or improved clean energy access in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, or the Indo-Pacific region. Creating a just and inclusive energy transition and extending the benefits of clean energy to all to meet sustainable development goals (SDGs) 7 'end energy poverty and 13 'climate action'.

Your proposal must focus on:

improving energy access in official development assistance (ODA) eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Indo-Pacific regions
have a technology or business model which is an affordable, reliable, and low carbon
consider the role of gender equality and social inclusion (GESI)

Eligibility

Your project can also involve organisations from any country
There are two types of lead organisations in energy catalyst, an administrative lead, who will start the application, and a technology lead. The administrative lead must be registered in the UK while the technology lead can be from anywhere in the world
To collaborate with the lead, your organisation must be one of the following: business of any size, academic institution, charity, not for profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO), and research and technology organisation (RTO)
You must involve at least one partner with a legal entity in one of the focus countries in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, or the Indo-Pacific region, this could include in-country offices
Subcontractors can be from anywhere in the world and you must select them through your usual procurement process.
All eligible organisations can lead or collaborate on any number of applications.

Your project’s total costs must be between £50,000 and £5 million. The competition opens on 18 May 2022 and closes on 10 August 2022

Genomic epidemiology for surveillance and control of poverty-related and emerging/re-emerging infections in sub-Saharan Africa

This topic aims to support activities to strengthen genomic epidemiology and its application to inform public health decision-making. The collaboration between the Global Health EDCTP3 Joint Undertaking and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation aims to leverage the genomic sequencing capacity being built in Africa to support epidemiology and surveillance of endemic and epidemic pathogens. In order to achieve this, partnerships between epidemiology sites (such as population cohorts and clinical trial sites) and genomic sequencing labs in national public health institutes (NPHIs) are needed, sharing and leveraging resources and expertise. The establishment of the Africa Pathogen Genomics Initiative (Africa PGI)with the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), coupled with the accelerated interest in genomic surveillance due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to increasing capacity for genomic sequencing in Africa.

2022 Call for Proposal Concepts

JRS Biodiversity Foundation

JRS Biodiversity Foundation has launched its 2022 Call for Proposal Concepts! They are currently inviting the submission of concept notes for project funding from sub-Saharan Africa to enhance the capacity for mobilization, use, and dissemination of biodiversity data in support of policymaking for sustainable development. Thematic focus areas include freshwater biodiversity, pollinator diversity, African 30-by-30 goals, and African representation in the post- 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework process.

Eligibility

Applicant project sites must be located in the sub-Saharan Africa geographic region. Eligible entities may include government agencies, conservation institutions, natural history museums, universities, research institutes, civil society networks, and NGOs.

Concept notes and full proposals must be submitted in English through the JRS Portal by the respective deadlines.

All JRS-funded activities must be not-for-profit. JRS funds may be used to support staff, travel, costs associated with the organization of meetings, workshops, and IT services and equipment.

If invited to submit a full proposal, applicants must provide plans to ensure the sustainability of activities after project support from JRS concludes.

If invited to submit a full project proposal, written confirmation from all project partners confirming their involvement in the project must be provided with the submission.

All proposed project activities must fall within the stated implementation periods for each grant type.

If invited to submit a full proposal, applicants must prepare a detailed budget. Overhead costs are limited depending on the grantee category.

Applicants are encouraged to explore co-funding (in kind or cash) for their projects. Co-funding refers to real costs that are incurred by the applicants while executing the funded project’s activities. These include in-kind contributions that directly contribute to the project activities (i.e., staff salaries, travel costs, etc.) or any in-cash contributions to grant activities from other funding sources.

Following the review of the concept notes, JRS will invite applicants successful in this round to submit a full proposal. Funded projects are expected to start in early 2023 with a project implementation period of between 12 and 36 months. Most projects funded by JRS fall within the $50,000 and $250,000 range. Amounts outside this range will need clear justifications.

Major Documentation Project (MDP)

Major Documentation Project is the name for any project over £10,000 which is not targeted to a specific career stage. Applicants for multi-person MDPs must have a proven track record in language documentation and linguistic analysis and have demonstrated the skills to manage such a project. The panel will expect to see evidence of positive outcomes of previous grants, including accessible archived data and previous research. Major Documentation Projects could involve a number of elements, including fieldwork, salary costs of researchers, and stipend costs of graduate students (while engaged in the field and in processing work) whose doctoral research will contribute to the project as a whole. You may request support for between 6 and 36 months.

Organizations and institutions in the region that provide care for cancer patients are invited to submit proposals for Quality Improvement (QI) projects to improve cancer diagnostics and treatment outcomes. Quality improvement projects are systematic, data-guided initiatives structured to generate measurable improvement in health care services and the health status of individuals and targeted patient groups.

The purpose of this RFP is two-fold:

To fund, and provide technical support for, quality improvement projects to build cancer diagnostic and therapeutic capability among healthcare professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Strengthening regulatory capacity for supporting conduct of clinical trials

Projects submitted to the Challenge must integrate a gender dimension (such as addressing the role of women in adapting to climate shifts and participating in policy-making and leadership roles) into their projects.

Biological vulnerability to extreme heat in maternal and child health

By the end of the award, successful applicants will have delivered new knowledge at this intersection and generated evidence with the potential to inform new interventions that can be used in real-world settings. Wellcome Trust is particularly interested in research that prioritises disadvantaged groups in low-or middle-income, or high-income countries. They encourage comparative research across multiple groups and geographies. Proof of concept studies involving non-human model organisms for human physiology will be considered.

You can apply for this award if you are a research leader who wants to pursue bold and creative research ideas that will significantly improve our understanding of biological vulnerability to extreme heat in the context of maternal and child health. This could include studies involving expectant and lactating mothers, fetuses, neonates, infants, and children under 5 years of age.

The U-M African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) program has helped retain and strengthen faculty members working in African institutions of higher education and empowered them to contribute to international academic networks and set their research agendas. The UMAPS Program brings early-career faculty from African universities to Ann Arbor, Michigan. Scholars are paired with a faculty collaborator during their stay and have full access to the University of Michigan's (U-M) resources to further their work on a research project, an academic degree, publications, grant proposal, or other relevant activity. The program supports the development of the next generation of African scholars by integrating them into international academic networks and promotes U-M’s international commitment to research and teaching collaborations across diverse disciplines, from engineering to literature to economics.

Ethicon Foundation Fund travel awards for overseas visits are awarded to fellows and members of the College who are in good standing. Successful applicants will normally be in training grade appointments, but more senior applicants may be considered at the discretion of the committee. Successful applicants will be awarded a grant; the value of which is at the discretion of the Ethicon Foundation Fund Advisory Committee.
Eligibility

The grants are intended to support applications that wish to enhance a speciality skill or experience that may not be available in the applicant's own country. Travel for the sole purpose of attending a scientific meeting will not be supported.
Applicants must demonstrate that the period overseas relates directly to their home country's surgical training scheme's objectives and/or an opportunity to obtain relevant surgical experience that is not normally available in their home country.
Applicants must have obtained prior approval for the visit from the appropriate training authority in the country of application where appropriate. UK trainees must produce confirmation/evidence of prospective approval from the GMC if the post is to count towards the award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
The awards contribute to economy class travel up to a value of £1,000 and are not available to support the travel costs of a spouse or partner.

Photosynthesis revisited: climate emergency, “no pollution and zero-emission” challenge and industrial application

The photosynthetic capacity of plants, algae, and other photosynthetic organisms to assimilate atmospheric carbon dioxide positions them at the center of the global climate change adaptation and mitigation challenges. Their autotrophic lifestyle also makes them ideal platform organisms for sustainable production of biomolecules, including molecules of high socio-economic value, of interest to diverse industrial sectors, by increasingly sophisticated synthetic and molecular biology approaches. This creates new opportunities for industrial production, beyond improved yields, while helping increase CO 2 assimilation capacity - contributing notably to the reduction of pollution in Europe, and making it more efficient. In particular, recent research confirms a strong correlation between plant physiological reactions during drought and heatwaves, which are increasing in frequency and intensity in Europe, notably by contributing to ozone pollution, the so-called ‘climate penalty of plants”. The successful proposal will contribute to Destination ‘Circular economy and bioeconomy sectors’ impacts, and the European policies it supports, in particular the European Green Deal, the circular economy action plan, and the bioeconomy strategy. They will help improve European industrial sustainability, competitiveness, and resource independence to develop innovative bio-based products. They will engage all stakeholders and improve their knowledge and understanding of science, notably of biotechnology-based value chains, and improve benefits for consumers. Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience
DAAD
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) under the "Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience" (PRIME) is inviting applications to support the international mobility of postdoctoral researchers by temporary positions at German universities in place of conventional scholarships. Postdoctoral researchers who see their long-term career perspectives in Germany receive funding for a research stay abroad based on a temporary position at a German university. In addition to the stay abroad, the funding also includes a mandatory return phase for subsequent reintegration into the German science system.
Eligibility

There are no restrictions regarding nationality and current residency. However, depending on nationality and place of residence, restrictions may apply when choosing the destination country for the stay abroad.
You must have completed your doctorate before the start of funding with very good marks (at least magna cum laude / very good for a doctorate in Germany). If the doctorate is not graded, the decision lies with the DAAD selection committee.
While not recommended, it is possible to apply in the final stages of the doctorate.
Applicants must comply with the programme’s mobility rule, i.e., they are free to choose any country (except Germany) as destination for their research stay abroad, provided they have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in that country for more than 12 onths in total during the three years preceding the application deadline of 31 August 2022. Time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention will not betaken into account.
Applicants who are EU nationals, resident citizens, or have been continuously active in research for three years’ full-time equivalent in the EU prior to the time of recruitment may spend their research stay outside of the EU. All other applicants must stay in the European Union for their 12-months “abroad” phase.
To be considered for funding, applicants living abroad are expected to state their intent to continue their research careers in Germany upon completion of the return phase.
Applicants who are already permanently employed by the research milieu where the research training activities are planned to take place and that is recruiting them may not be supported.
Applicants must accept that the research stay abroad and the return phase to Germany are both mandatory parts of the programme.

DAAD provides support for 18 months: the first 12 months are spent abroad and the remaining 6 months of the return phase are spent in Germany (funding cycle 12+6). The deadline for application is August 31, 2022.

DAAD Scholarship for Students from Developing Countries
Munich Intellectual Property Law Center
The MIPLC is a part of the DAAD's scholarship program for "Development-Related Postgraduate Courses". The scholarship recipients will be granted a full waiver of the MIPLC tuition and participation fee. In addition, the DAAD will pay the scholarship recipients a monthly stipend of EUR 850. As a rule,
the scholarship also includes certain payments towards health, accident and liability insurance coverage in Germany. Furthermore, the DAAD will generally pay an appropriate travel allowance, unless these costs are covered by the home country or by another funding source. The DAAD will also pay a study and research allowance. Last but not least, the scholarship covers a mandatory two-month German course before the start of the program. The scholarship does not cover additional costs, e.g. your enrollment fees or the fees for a semester ticket for public transport in Munich.

You are eligible for the DAAD scholarship for "Development-Related Postgraduate Courses" if you fulfil the following formal requirements:

You hold at least a four-year Bachelor's degree (or a three-year Bachelor's degree plus a further degree), completed with above-average results (top 30%).
You received your latest degree no more than six years before your scholarship application.
You have at least two years of full-time professional experience gained in a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country (university staff and academics are generally not taken into account). To meet this requirement, it is sufficient if you have completed the two years by the time the program starts in October. In any case, the experience must have been gained after the completion of your first university degree.
You meet the English language requirements of the MIPLC.

Life sciences and their convergence with digital technologies for prospecting, understanding and sustainably using biological resources

Engineering biology applications have grown beyond chemical production to include the generation of biosensor organisms for the lab, animal, and field, modification of agricultural organisms for nutrition and pest/environmental resilience, production of organisms for bioremediation, and live-cell and gene/viral therapies. The rapid expansion of the field has resulted in new tools and new approaches. However, we are still challenged by the need for novel and more robust and interoperable computational tools and models for engineering biology. For example, improved models of synthetic systems (synthetic biology) and of their interaction with their host organisms could help enable more successful engineering. The topic aims to prevent pollution and sustainably manage and use natural
resources within safe planetary boundaries, including in the deployment of the bioeconomy and the bio- based sectors. The proposals should enable prospecting, understanding and sustainable use of biological resources based on their convergence with digital technologies that lead to optimised and more efficient bio-based operations. Charles Bullard Fellowship in Forest Research

The Charles Bullard fellowship program supports advanced research and study by individuals who show promise of making an important contribution, either as scholars or administrators, to forestry and forest-related subjects including biology, earth sciences, economics, politics, administration, philosophy, humanities, the arts, or law. The Fellowships carry stipends up to $60,000; the amount of each award depends on the professional status and needs of the recipient and the duration of the Fellowship. Fellows have the option of having the award paid either to themselves or to the Fellow's employer. All Bullard Fellows will be reimbursed for the costs of one round trip travel between their Fellowship site location and their home base.

International researchers have additional considerations when applying for a Bullard Fellowship, such as the visa process, logistics, and financial implications.
Awarded to individuals in mid-career who have established themselves in academia, public service, or in the private sector.
For those in academic careers, preference is ordinarily given to holders of doctoral degrees, but others whose projects show promise of important contributions to forestry and forest studies, broadly defined, will be considered in terms of the likelihood that study and research at Harvard will help fulfill this promise

ERC Proof of Concept Grants2

The ERC Proof of Concept Grants aims to maximize the value of the excellent research that the ERC funds, by funding further work (i.e. activities which were not scheduled to be funded by the original ERC frontier research grant) to verify the innovation potential of ideas arising from ERC funded projects. Proof of Concept Grants is therefore on offer only to Principal Investigators whose proposals draw substantially on their ERC-funded research. The ERC expects that normally proof of concept projects should be completed within 12 months. However, to allow for those projects that require more preparation time, projects will be signed for 18 months. Given this initial flexibility, extensions of the duration of proof of concept projects may be granted only exceptionally.

All Principal Investigators in the main grant that is ongoing or has ended less than 12 months before 1 January 2022 are eligible to apply to the ERC-2022-PoC2 call under the ERC Work Programme 2022.
Synergy Grant Principal Investigators are eligible to apply only with the written consent of all Principal Investigators in the same Synergy Grant project.
Principal Investigators may submit only one proposal under each Work Programme 2022 Proof of Concept call.

The total budget for this grant is valued at EUR 25000000 however, the financial contribution will be awarded as a lump sum of EUR 150 000 for a period of 18 months.

The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) believes that their conferences work best when attended by members from all levels of academia. But they understand that attending conferences can be expensive, especially for early-career scientists. To encourage attendance at ASAB conferences, they award Conference Attendance Grants of up to £500. The award provides a contribution towards the cost of registration, accommodation, and meals, as well as the cost of travel to and from the conference

DAAD Scholarship for Students from Developing Countries

Munich Intellectual Property Law Center

The MIPLC is a part of the DAAD's scholarship program for "Development-Related Postgraduate Courses". The scholarship recipients will be granted a full waiver of the MIPLC tuition and participation fee. In addition, the DAAD will pay the scholarship recipients a monthly stipend of EUR 850. As a rule, the scholarship also includes certain payments towards health, accident and liability insurance coverage in Germany. Furthermore, the DAAD will generally pay an appropriate travel allowance, unless these costs are covered by the home country or by another funding source. The DAAD will also pay a study and research allowance. Last but not least, the scholarship covers a mandatory two-month German course before the start of the program.
