The Department of Economic Theory concentrates in the training of modern micro and macroeconomic theory from Undergraduate to PhD level. Upon admission, students are taught by highly qualified and motivated staff who endeavor to expose students to a range of topics in both basic and advanced economic theory. The Department ensures its curriculum is upto date to guarantee production of quality graduates that will contribute positively towards creating solutions to the world’s countless problems.

Training in microeconomics focuses on Behavioural economics; Theory of the Consumer; Theory of the Firm; Efficiency analysis; Game Theory; Markets; Intertemporal Optimization; Welfare analysis; and Externalities among other interesting areas. On the other hand, macroeconomics focuses on modern macroeconomics preparing students to be able to model Short run macro phenomena using Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models and Longrun phenomena using Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models among others. Students are also exposed to models such as Agent Based Computational Economics (ACE) with the aim of broadening their scope and improving their competence in macroeconomics. The department also harnesses existing synergies locally and abroad to generate high quality research and consultancy.
