DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY EDUCATION MANAGEMENT, POLICY AND CUR5RICULUM STUDIES
The common regulations for the Doctor of Philosophy degree at Kenyatta University shall
apply. The common regulations for Doctor of Philosophy degree in the school of Education shall apply. The following shall be eligible for Doctor of Philosophy degree in the Department of Educational Management, Policy and Curriculum Studies.
i) A holder of a Master of Education degree of Kenyatta University or equivalent from a
recognised Institution of higher learning.
ii) Must have taken at least five (5) units at M.Ed level in the area of specialization. iii) Must show ability to undertake academic research by having written a thesis/Dissertation or research Project.
Duration of the Programme
The duration of the PhD. degree programme shall be as follows: A full time student shall be registered for a minimum of three (3) years and a maximum of four (4) years. A part-time student shall be registered for a minimum of four (4) years and a maximum of six (6) years. Continuance of registration will depend on evidence of satisfactory student progress.To qualify for Doctor of philosophy a student must have taken and passed ten (10) units (4 common, 4 core, 2 electives plus a puss in his/her PhD thesis.) (see. 13.0)
Structure of the Programme
The Programme shall consist of Course work, Examination and Thesis.
Courses are structured in units in which a unit is defined as 35 hours per semester in which lectures will be given in block of 3 hours per week.
All coursework shall be done within one year for full-time students and Two years for part-time
Areas of Specialisation
This Programme is designed to cater for courses in four areas of specialisation as follows: Educational Management, Curriculum Studies, Educational Planning, Economics of Education.
All courses shall be examined at the end of the semester in which they are taken. Examination shall consist of University Examination, which shall constitute 50 per cent and continuous assessment, which shall constitute 50 per cent.The pass mark in all courses shall be 50 per cent. A candidate who fails to satisfy the Board of Examiners in one or two Units out of the five (5) Units taken in any one Semester will be allowed to take supplementary examination in the failed units, when they are next offered. A candidate who fails in a supplementary examination shall be discontinued.A Candidate who fails to satisfy the Board of Examiners in more than 2 units out of the five (5) in any one Semester will be discontinued. All candidates will be required to take a Departmental written comprehensive examination in an area of specialization at the end of the first year of study as a full time and two years of study for part-time students in order to qualify for doctoral degree candidacy. A candidate who fails to satisfy the Departmental Board of examiners in the Comprehensive Examination will be allowed to take a supplementary Comprehensive Examination when it is next offered.A candidate who fails to satisfy the Departmental Board of examiners in the Comprehensive Examination for the second time will be discontinued. Candidates will be required to make an oral presentation of their proposal in the first Semester of the second year for full time and the first Semester of the Third year for Part-time Students. Candidates shall be expected to present at least two seminar papers and defend their PhD thesis at the Department level before submitting the theses to the Graduate School.
Candidates will be required to have a public presentation (colloquium) of the findings of their PhD thesis.
Grading System: 70%-100% (A), 60%-69% (B), 50%-59% (C), 49 and below D
