Dr. Nyamu is the Team Leader coordinating a research project funded by CODESRIA for documenting profiles of university leaders in Kenya who have made a significant contribution in transformation of higher education. We have profiled the late Prof. George Magoha, a former Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Prof. Leah Marangu, a former Vice-Chancellor Africa Nazarene University and Prof. Simon Gicharu, owner and proprietor of Mount Kenya University. We submitted the final draft to CODESRIA on in April, 2022. Dr. Nyamu is also a member of a multidisciplinary multi-institutional research team led by Kenyatta University in a research entitled, “An assessment of the production of educational research and its utilisation for policy formulation and programme implementation in Kenya,” awarded by the National Research Fund (NRF) in the financial year 2016/2017. The other institutions are the Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development (KICD) and Laikipia University. Through the NRF Grant, the team developed the KERD, Kenya Educational Research Database hosted in Kenyatta university library and can be accessed as kerd.ku.ac.ke.

Research

  • September 2017-2021: Under the leadership of Prof. Grace Bunyi of Kenyatta University, I am a member of a team that is carrying out research on an NRF funded project: An assessment of the production of educational research and its utilization for policy formulation and programme implementation in Kenya. In June 2021, Dr. Nyamu’s team produced an annotated bibliography of 24 reviews of educational research in Kenya.
  • May 2009-Signed a contract with Futures group International to document lessons learnt during the period April 2008 to April 2009 and to facilitate in workshops in May and June 2009.
  • July 2008- Baseline Study on the Status of Education in Kajiado, Narok and Transmara Districts for SNV Kenya
  • November 2007 - Documentation of Lessons Learnt for the Health Policy Initiative for projects on HIV and AIDS funded by USAID under the Presidents’ Emergency Plan AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) initiative. The documentation process involved developing data collection tools, interviewing the beneficiaries and preparing the report.  
  • August 2007-The Undugu Society of Kenya (USK) contracted me to undertake a research study on the Impact of Free Primary education in the Kibera Slum.
  • April 2007: With a colleague, Dr. Bunyi of Kenya University, we won a bid for a literature review on “characterizing out-of-school children in sub-Saharan Africa” for the African population and Health Research Centre (APHRC).
  • April 2007: I undertook a feasibility study for the Assumption Sisters of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi to establish the viability of a girls’ secondary school in the Runda area of Kiambu District.
  • October 2006:  In collaboration with a colleague, Dr. Bunyi of Kenyatta University, undertook a literature review and wrote a paper on the education sector analysis in Kenya with a case study of non-formal education in West Pokot, for SNV Kenya

  • March 29, 2007: USAID Kenya contracted as a rapporteur and facilitator for a meeting of all the stakeholders involved in a project on Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Kenya, funded by the United States Government
  • December 5-6, 2006. I was contracted as lead rapporteur for the Joint Review Conference on Population and Development by the Futures Group International on behalf of the national Coordinating Agency for Population and Development (NCAPD).
  • June 19-21, 2006 I was contracted by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America-International (PPFA) (Africa Regional Office) to be Chief Rapporteur for an international conference on sexual health and rights held at the Hilton Hotel in Nairobi.
