Entry Requirements

A candidate pursuing the B.Sc (Mechanical Engineering) degree programme must meet the minimum entry requirements for the School of Engineering and Technology.
The candidate must have attained the following minimum grades at KSCE or equivalent qualifications: Mathematics (B+), Physics (B+), Chemistry (B), English (B)  Mean Grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or equivalent with Higher Diploma of credit pass in relevant field of study from a recognized institution.

Examinations
Common University regulations concerning evaluation shall apply.Design units to be assessed by design exercise 50%, 10% continuous assessment test and final examinations 40%. For non design units the final examination will constitute 70% of the total marks while coursework and assessment and assignment will constitute 30%.An engineering project will be examined through a written report accounting for 70% of the total marks. There will be two oral presentation constituting 30% of the total mark of the indicated course.

The pass mark for each course shall be 40%. Assessment of practical attachment to be based on student's log-book, report and supervisor's evaluation report.

Supplementary Examinations
Any examination in a unit taken by a candidate as a result of failing the unit at the first attempt is
a supplementary examination.Supplementary examination period shall normally be at the end of a year of study in which the unit is offered.A candidate who fails in any unit, up to a maximum of four units at the ordinary examination shall be required to sit supplementary examinations in all the failed units during the supplementary period immediately following the ordinary examinations in which he/she failed the A candidate who fails a unit at the supplementary examination period shall be required to retake the examination during the next time the unit is offered at the ordinary examinations.A candidate who fails a supplementary examination of any year of study during the supplementary examination period shall not be allowed to proceed to the next year of study but shall be required to retake the examination during the next time the unit is offered at the ordinary examinations.

Special Examinations
If through unavoidable circumstances such as bereavement or sickness a candidate is unable to
sit for one or more examination papers, or is unable to undertake essential parts of the work for continuous assessment the candidate may, on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners, and with the approval of Senate, be permitted to take special examination, or undertake extra work for continuous assessment. Special examinations shall be marked out of School of Engineering and Technology 100% and shall include continuous assessment.

Certification
To qualify for the award of the degree, the candidate should have successfully completed a minimum of 80 units of which 68 are compulsory and 12 electives.
