THE SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES  TRIP TO THE COAST 2022

The school of Environmental studies department of environmental sciences and education organized an educational trip to the coastal town of Mombasa on 24th- 27th March, 2022. The trip started at the main Campus at 7 a.m. and had a smooth ride to Mtito Andei, where there was a stopover for the students to have a lunch break and refreshments. They embarked on the journey and stopped at Tsavo national park to view wildlife, before proceeding to Mombasa arriving at 7.a.m. and rested for the night. On 25th March, 2022 the students had a very educative day at Mtwapa Karlo agricultural station, where they learned more on integrated biotechnology, which deals with applied biology that involves the use of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering, technology, medicine, and other fields requiring bio-products. They later visited the famous Vasco Da Gama pillar for fun. On 26th the second Day of the trip, they visited Malindi Beach, where they learned more on coastal ecosystems- A marine coastal ecosystem is a marine ecosystem which occurs where the land meets the ocean. Marine coastal ecosystems include many different types of marine habitats, such as estuaries and lagoons, salt marshes and mangrove forests, sea grass meadows and coral reefs, kelp forests and backwaters. They had an opportunity to visit the Kongo estuary, which is a Beautiful river estuary with ever changing sandy beach, great waves and a sunset scenario to die for. It is a very favorite outdoors place in Diani Beach. Diani Beach has been awarded the best beach destination in Africa for 5 years running, and it's easy to see why. Located 30km south of Mombasa, this south coast beach is surrounded by the warm Indian Ocean, with countless beach resorts to accommodate you during your stay. On 27th March, 2022 the trip ended and the students embarked on their journey back to the campus where they arrived at 6.p.m. in the evening. They said it was a very educative trip especially at Karlo and Malindi beach. They thanked the University and School Administration for organizing such an educative trip.
