MA English and Linguistics, 2019

The Master of Arts (English & Linguistics) course offered by the Department of Literature, Linguistics and Foreign Languages gave me an opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge and become a master phonetician. During coursework, the Department ensured that I was exposed to best practice in linguistics. I specialised in Acoustic Phonetics, an area that requires a firm grasp of linguistics and computational statistics. I was glad that the courses in phonetics and phonology and linguistics field methods had firmly grounded me in these areas. The lecturers in the Department are not only specialists in their areas but also patient, approachable and understanding and they were of great help during my fieldwork. Further, the numerous workshops and seminars organized by the Department gave me invaluable skills in quantitative and qualitative approaches in linguistics. I greatly developed my professional network while a student in the Department of Literature, Linguistics and Foreign Languages and I can now conduct research and publish papers. I would highly recommend Master of Art (Eng/Ling) to anyone who wants to work as a professional linguist. The course has a variety of specializations so that everyone’s interests in linguistics are catered for.
