Adebayo Adefemi Oguntuase from Nigeria
My name is Adebayo Adefemi Oguntuase from Nigeria. I am currently a PhD in Literature student in the Department of Literature, Linguistics and Foreign Languages since 2019. Having attended three different Universities in Nigeria and having travelled to parts of the United Kingdom, USA and Asia, I am able to say that my Department in Kenyatta University and the University itself in general offer a globally-relevant and competitive education of high international standards. The approach to PhD work offered by the department’s literature section is both unique and commendable. Students' entry behavior (their background as BA and MA degrees holder) and experience are discounted. I had to do Course work which I find enriching and ennobling. This is not the practice in other Departments and Universities elsewhere in Nigeria where it is assumed that students already know what they may not have adequately grasped hitherto. The PhD courses taught in class by a highly competent phalanx of dons trained locally and in Europe include:
1. ALT 901-Advanced Research Methods
2. ALT 902-Advanced Literary Theory
3. ALT 903-Advanced Critical & Creative Writing
4. ALT 997-Popular Culture & Literature.
The Literature PhD course entails course work, examination and thesis. The outcome of this intellectually rigorous methodology is a candidate who fits in the academic world and is internationally competitive. Ghanaians are part of the international research students in the Literature section of the department. Tanzanians, Rwandans and Eritreans have passed through this department. I recommend it as a destination for researchers who want to learn through lectures, workshops, seminars and personal study in the well-stocked Literature resource center and Post Modern Library of the Main University with its thousands of archives both in print and electronic forms.
