Regulations for the Doctoral Programme in Counselling Psychology
The common regulations for the Ph.D. degree in all Schools shall apply. The general regulations for all Ph.D. degrees in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences shall apply. The following shall be eligible for admission for the Ph.D. degree in Counselling Psychology.
- A holder of an M.A., or M.Sc., Degree in Counselling Psychology of Kenyatta University or any other recognized University.
- A holder of a M.Ed. Degree in Guidance and Counselling of Kenyatta University or any other recognized University.
Duration and Pattern of the Programme
The Ph.D. degree in Counselling Psychology shall be offered on a Full- time and a Part-time option.The Ph.D. degree in Counselling Psychology shall extend over a period of at least three (3) year from the date of registration for a candidate studying full-time. Part-time candidates shall be registered for a minimum of four (4) years, except that under special cases the Graduate School may recommend to Senate that the candidate may submit the thesis after three (3) years. No candidate for Ph.D. degree in Counselling Psychology shall be registered as a full-time student for more than four (4) years or a part-time student for more than six (6) years.Maximum period of study for a Ph.D. degree in Counselling Psychology may be extended for no longer than nine (9) months and twelve (12) months for full-time and part-time Ph. D. candidates respectively, unless under special circumstances. Students for the Ph.D. degree in Counselling Psychology are expected to do coursework, examination, practicum and internship, and thesis.
There are four areas of specialization in the programme as follows:
- Counselling in School and Higher Education
- Community and Agency Counselling Family therapy and Systemic Practice
- Police Psychology and Offender Rehabilitation.Students (both full-time and part-time) will spend their first year doing TEN Units, of which SIX will be core and FOUR electives units. The TEN units taught will be composed of FOUR from the General Core Units and TWO from the Specialization Core Units, and FOUR from the list of elective Units. In the first semester of their first year of study, students should register for all four (4) of the general core units plus any one (1) of the four elective units for the programme. In the second semester of their first year of study, students should register for two (2) of their selected specialization units plus any three (3) remaining elective units. In their second year of study, will concentrate on their supervised advanced clinical practicum/internship in counseling, equivalent to 8 units, the outcome of which will be embodied in a report to be presented to the Department for grading.While on their clinical practicum/internship, students are expected to start work with their supervisors on their doctoral thesis, to prepare for their Ph.D. research proposal.In the final year of study a student shall submit the thesis for examination A student who meets the entire requirements for the programme shall be awarded the degree of Ph.D. (Counselling Psychology) of Kenyatta University.
Mode of Evaluation
The Common University regulations concerning evaluation shall apply. Students enrolled for the Doctor of Philosophy in Counselling Psychology will be expected to take written examinations at the end of each semester on all taught units. All examination papers shall be of 3 hour duration. The final examinations will constitute 60% of the total marks while the continuous assignment will constitute 40 %.The grading of the practicum/Internship report will be out of 100%. The pass Mark for each taught unit and the practicum report shall be 50%. A candidate who fails to satisfy requirement (7.6) may be permitted on the recommendation of the Board of examiners and with the approval of the Senate to take supplementary examinations in the failed unit(s) up to a maximum of two units in any academic year. A candidate who fails in the supplementary examinations shall be discontinued. Candidates who fails more than three (3) Units in the ordinary University examinations in any academic year shall be discontinued. Students will carry out a research on an approved counseling problem. A thesis embodying the results of the research shall be presented to the University for examinations. A candidate who shows proof of having gone through a similar Ph.D. coursework programme at a recognized Institution shall, subject to the discretion of the Department’s Postgraduate Board, be exempted from taking these same courses.
