ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The criteria for admission in the department of Sociology are those that apply for Kenyatta University and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students can take a major in Sociology or a minor in Sociology in the 3:3:2:2 degree patterns
+. This means that students take courses in three departments in level 100 units and level 200 units and courses in two departments at level 300 and 400.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
100 SERIES
ASC 100:INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY
Concepts of Sociology as an academic discipline and a social science, branches of Sociology, its relation to other sciences, leading founding thinkers of Sociology.  Comte, Spencer, Durkheim, Weber, Parsons, Saint di-Simon, Marx and Cooley.  Social processes and the relation between man and society, nature and functions of various social institutions.
ASC 101:INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY
Introduction to various branches of anthropology such as archeology, physical and biological aspects of anthropology, linguistic, economic, ethnological and cultural anthropology, anthropological research methods, founding fathers of anthropology.  Malinowski, Levi-Strauss, favor and Margaret Mead.  Culture, cultural change, use of symbols and communication.  Social structure in traditional and modern societies, traditional and modern social institutions.  Social change in Africa including urbanization and related alterations.
ASC 102:SOCIAL STATISTICS I
Background and definition of statistics, types of statistics.  Function and limitations of statistics, descriptive data, scales of measurements, measures of central tendency and dispersion, data analysis procedure and presentation, elements of probability.

ASC 200:SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY 1
Major social thinkers and theorists of the past, different schools of thought and various perspectives as they have evolved in the field of Sociology: evolution, functionalism, conflict, social exchange and interaction.  Contemporary social theorists.
ASC 201:SOCIAL CHANGE
Major concepts and indicators of social change, major sources of social and cultural chance with particular emphasis on Africa. Micro and macro analysis of the impact of technological change on education, population growth, economy, mass communication and social structure, selected theories and models of social change such as conflict theory, evolutionary theory, modernization and diffusion theories.
ASC 202:METHODS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH 1
Methods of knowing, definition of social research, various methods of sociological research, qualitative and quantitative techniques.  Various approaches to sampling, interviewing, data collection, data analysis and presentation.  Research concepts.
ASC 203:METHODS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH II
Preparation of proposals, definition of the research problem, literature review, theorizing, conceptualization of research models, research questions, hypothesis, objectives, justification, research premises, scope and limitations, methodology, construction of research instruments, techniques of data collection, fieldwork requirements, report writing and ethics of social research.
