BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HEALTH SERVICE MANAGEMENT)
Entry Requirements
In addition to meeting the University requirements, candidates for admission to Bachelor of Health Service Management Degree course shall be required to have obtained
Either
i. A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education mean grade of C+ (plus) and above with a combination of: English or Kiswahili C +, Mathematics C+ , Any one science subject C + or Any one humanities subject: C+ OR
ii. A Diploma with a Credit grade in Management or Systems Management from a recognized institution with at least 2 years relevant post qualification experience.
iii. In addition the candidate should have obtained a C (plain) at KCSE or Division III at EACE with credit grades in the cluster subjects listed in above OR
Mean grade of C- (minus) at KCSE and progressed from certificate to Diploma at Kenyatta University or any other recognized/accredited Institutions.
Credit Waiver
Credit waiver will be considered for students taking the same programme in a recognized institution, subject to approval by the Department.
Course Requirements and Degree Pattern
The Bachelor of Health Services Management (BHSM) extends over a period of four (4) academic years. Each academic year shall consist of two (2) semesters for full time students and three (3) sessions for part-time students. The students will take a maximum of fourteen (14) units each academic year.
Field Attachment/Practicum
This aims at exposing students to actual public health informational issues and problems. The students will be attached to a relevant health organization for three (3) months, which is expected to give them adequate exposure to the required experience and skills in community health.The module of study will be regular and institutional based learning (IBP).
The common University examinations regulations governing Undergraduate Degree programmes shall apply.
Mode of Examinations
All units shall be examined at the end of the semester in which they are taken. The assessment
of the students' work shall be on the basis of percentage (%) marks. The pass mark in all unit courses shall be 40% of the total marks.
Written Examinations
Examinations shall consist of Continuous Assessment Tests (CATS) which shall contribute 30% and University examinations which shall contribute 70%.
Projects
Units involving field work such as projects shall be examined as follows:
A Supervisor's Report after the field course shall constitute 30%. The project proposal shall com- prise 20% and the project report 50 %.
Attachments
Units involving field work such as attachment shall be examined as follows:
A Supervisor's Report after the attachment shall constitute 30%. Oral presentation, logbook, field supervisor's assessment report and University supervision shall constitute 70%.
Grading
Each Unit shall be out of 100. The Mark shall be translated into letter grade as follows: (A) 70 and Above, (B)60 - 69 ,(C)50 - 59 ,(D) 40 - 49 Retake/Fail 39 and below.
Certification
The degree that will be awarded is the Bachelor of Health Services Management (BHSM). In order to qualify for the award of this degree a candidate must have taken and passed all the units (minimum 48 units), University Common Units (4) and a Research Project (2 units) for a total of 52 units.
