DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE PROGRAMME
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
  1. The common regulations for all Masters degree in the University shall apply.
  2. The general regulations for all Masters degree in the School of Pure and Applied Sciences shall apply.
  3. The following shall be eligible for registration for the Master of Science degree in the Department.
  • Holders of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Education(Science) degree with at least an upper second class honours or equivalent from a recognized University. Should have studied Chemistry as a major or regular subject and obtained at least an average grade C in Chemistry units done.
  • Holders of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Education (Science) with lower second class degree or its equivalent from a recognized University and at least two years of teaching Chemistry or working in a research institution will be considered.
N/B: evidence of a good background in mathematics is essential.
Specialization can be done in either of the following:
  1. Analytical Chemistry,
  2. Inorganic Chemistry,
  3. Organic Chemistry,
  4. Physical Chemistry,
  5. Theoretical Chemistry.
MASTER OF SCIENCE (APPLIED ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY) PROGRAMME
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  3. The following shall be eligible for registration for the Master of Science(Applied Analytical Chemistry) degree in the Department.
  • Holders of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Education(Science) degree with at least an upper second class honours or equivalent from a recognized University.Should have studied Chemistry as a major or regular subject and obtained at least an average grade C in Chemistry units done.
  • Holders of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Education (Science) with lower second class degree or its equivalent from a recognized University and at least two years of teaching Chemistry or working in a research institution will be considered.

Postgraduate Students
We have an enrollment of more that 25 students every year.

Study mode and Duration
The Department has Ph.D. students in various disciplines that are related to what we offer. The Ph.D. degrees are based on research alone and take between 3 and 4 years maximum.
For M.Sc. the mode of study is based on the units system. The course duration is 2 years. Taught course work takes one year and thesis takes the second year.

Master of Science Degree in Applied and Theoretical Physics

Intake:
In the regular programme, an intake has between 5 and 12 masters students.
In the School based programme, an intake has between 8 and 15
Ph.D intake is open provided the area selected has qualified staff.
Study Mode Duration and Assessment

The M./Sc degree programme may be undertaken in either one academic year of course work and examinations followed by one academic year of research or two academic years of course work examination and a research project. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) is undertaken by research only.

The M./Sc and Ph.D programmes may be taken in any one of the specialization areas in Pure, Applied and Theoretical Physics.
