Research Activities 2015
- Abstract
Insects are one of the major causes of grain losses during storage. Their impact in the global post-harvest grain crops and other bio-agents range from 10% to 40% for major crops. Management of agricultural pests in the past has been largely depending on the use of effective fumigants and synthetic chemical pesticides like phosphine and methyl bromide for field and post-harvest protection of crops. However, these synthetic insecticides are toxic and show adversely effects to the environment by contaminating soil, water and air such as ozone depletion. The extensive use of these insecticides has led to develop a resistance in several species, vast destruction of beneficial organisms.
The twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch. (Acari: Tetranychidae), is one of the most serious pests in the world of exported food, such as paprika, apple, pear, rose, strawberry, bear and sweet persimmon and of horticultural plants. For example, on mandarin trees, T. urticae produces webbing and dense colonies on the underside of the leaves. As a result of their feeding, chlorotic spots are observed on the upperside of the leaves. At the end of summer, T. urticae causes a characteristic fruit scarring and consequent fruit.
Control of these insects pest relies heavily on the use of synthetic insecticides which has serious drawbacks such as development of genetic resistance, toxic residues, worker safety and increasing cost of application. Because of the increasing drawbacks of the continuing use of today’s conventional fumigants, an effort is needed to develop new plant substances as alternative pest control agents to replace the fumigants which are currently used.
In this regard species of genus Kotschya and Trichilia belonging families, Papilionaceae and Meliaceae are being investigated for secondary metabolites having repellants, toxic and growth disrupting effect on the two spotted spider mite.
SYNTHESIS OF (R)-1-METHYL-4-(1-METHYLETHENYL)CYCLOHEXENE MULTIFUNCTIONAL DERIVATIVES AND THEIR EFFECTS ON JATROPHA CURCAS AND ALGAE BIOFUEL BLENDS PROPERTIES
- Abstract
Around the world there is a growing increase in biofuel consumption mainly ethanol and biodiesel as well as their blends with petroleum diesel to reduce cost while retaining the advantages of biofuels such as increasing lubricity and reduction of exhaust emissions. Currently there is a desire to extend or enhance biodiesel and biodiesel blended properties by use of multifunctional additives. This project is seeking to evaluate the miscibility of the fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) blends from algae and Jatropha curcas L. oils also synthesise saturated, hydrogenated and oxygenated derivatives of d-limonene as additives to the biofuel blends to enhance their ignition-related, miscibility and thermochemical properties.
Properties of improved fuel with different added derivatives of d-Limonene and ethanol production from algae are being investigated.
