WELCOME TO KENYATTA UNIVESRITY WELLNESS AND REHABILITATION SERVICES

The directorate wishes to welcome Kenyatta University students and staff in the year 2020. We welcome you to participate in our activities throughout the year in order to promote the wellbeing of each and every one of us.

The Directorate of Wellness and Rehabilitation Services emerged from the amalgamation of two directorates namely, Wellness Center and AIDS Control Unit and Dr. Tabitha Wang’eri appointed as the first director. The seat of the directorate is located in BSSC Room 143 where the Director’s office is located while other offices are located at Ghana 4 where HIV testing and counseling counselors are based.
The services provided by the directorate include provision of psychological counseling, HIV testing and Counseling, referral services for clients presenting psychiatric symptoms as well as those with substance dependence challenges for both staff and students.
The activities the directorate engages in include sensitizing students and staff about healthy lifestyles, for example, the benefits of physical wellness including good nutrition, seeking health checks, adherence to medication as well as avoiding harmful lifestyles such as alcohol and substance abuse. The directorate seeks to ensure psychological wellness for students and staff by providing psychological counseling in intra and inter personal issues such as stress management, alcohol and substance abuse, relationships, campaigns against alcohol and drug use. Students receive information regarding smooth navigation of university life thus ensuring timely graduation. Pursuance of healthy academic practices and avoiding all forms of examination malpractices, engagement in prudent use of resources as well as avoidance of toxic relationships and observance of safety measures are some of the issues the directorate addresses.
In addition, the directorate engages in the preventive and management aspects of HIV/AIDS response. The preventive aspects include sensitization talks that increase HIV knowledge among staff and students, stressing the need to observe the ABC (Abstinence, partner faithfulness and condom use) approach to HIV prevention, Condon use promotion, voluntary medical male circumcision, PrEP and PEP use. Sensitization talks further include topics such as stigma and discrimination, antiretroviral drug adherence, relationship between gender-based violence and HIV infections. Kenyatta University is a registered HIV testing site and thus HIV testing services are provided at the Ghana 4 clinic all week days from 8 to 5pm. Clients who are HIV positive are screened for TB and other opportunistic conditions and linked to Comprehensive care at the same clinic.
In the spirit of impactful fulfillment of its mandate, the directorate plans stand alone events such as HIV testing, alcohol and drugs campaign weeks and also synchronizes some of the activities with major university events such as the culture week. Directorate also elicits the good will of the University management who provide logistical support as well as friendly working environment. Other internal players who give immense support to the work of the directorate are Kenyatta University Student Leaders who provide valuable support and partnerships to all the activities of the directorate. In addition, various student clubs such as KUSACO, Red Cross, Peer Counselors and Amazing minds are always at the forefront in helping the directorate fulfill its mandate in ways that are youth friendly. The directorate is indeed appreciative of the roles played by these young people who generously share ideas and are great mobilizers for all the directorate’s activities.
The directorate has very vibrant partnerships with external bodies that include NACC, AHF, NASCOP, APHIA JIJINI, KEMSA, NACADA, World Vision, Basic Needs and Alfajiri Community Based Organization and we are also planning to expand the partnership base further this year with the aim of reaching out to the majority of students and staff with wellness messages and services.
