As per the Charter and Statutes of Kenyatta University, the duties and responsibilities of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) are:

  • Academic Leadership: Providing strategic leadership and direction in academic matters to advance the university's mission and objectives.

  • Curriculum Development and Review: Overseeing the development, review, and enhancement of academic programs, courses, and curricula to ensure relevance, quality, and alignment with national and international standards.

  • Quality Assurance: Implementing mechanisms for quality assurance and enhancement in teaching, learning, and assessment processes across the university.

  • Academic Policies and Regulations: Formulating, reviewing, and implementing academic policies, regulations, and procedures to ensure compliance with accreditation standards, government regulations, and best practices in higher education.

  • Research and Innovation: Promoting a culture of research, scholarship, and innovation among faculty and students, and facilitating opportunities for research funding, collaboration, and dissemination.

  • Faculty Development: Supporting the professional development and career advancement of faculty members through mentoring, training, and recognition programs.

  • Student Affairs: Collaborating with the Registrar (Academic) and other stakeholders to enhance student academic support services, including advising, counseling, and academic enrichment programs.

  • Examinations and Assessment: Overseeing the planning, administration, and integrity of examinations and assessments, including the implementation of policies and procedures to prevent academic misconduct.

  • Academic Partnerships: Establishing and nurturing partnerships with other academic institutions, industry, government agencies, and international organizations to promote academic excellence, research collaboration, and knowledge exchange.

  • Strategic Planning: Contributing to the development and implementation of strategic plans, goals, and objectives related to academic affairs and institutional advancement.

  • Budgetary Oversight: Participating in budget planning and allocation processes to ensure adequate resources for academic programs, research activities, and faculty development initiatives.

  • Interdepartmental Collaboration: Collaborating with other Deputy Vice-Chancellors, college deans, department heads, and administrative units to facilitate interdisciplinary research, teaching, and service initiatives.

  • Representation and Advocacy: Representing the university in academic forums, professional associations, and government bodies, and advocating for policies and resources to support academic excellence and innovation.

  1. Academic Administration: Overseeing the academic administrative functions of the university, including registration, admissions, examination scheduling, and academic records management.

  2. Curriculum Development: Collaborating with academic departments and faculty to develop and review academic programs, courses, and curricula in line with accreditation standards and educational best practices.

  3. Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with university policies, as well as local and national regulations governing academic affairs, including adherence to academic quality standards and accreditation requirements.

  4. Student Affairs: Managing student academic services, such as academic advising, course registration, graduation requirements, and academic appeals processes.

  5. Examinations Management: Coordinating the planning and administration of examinations, including scheduling, invigilation, grading, and the publication of results.

  6. Faculty Support: Providing support and guidance to faculty members on academic policies, procedures, and regulations, as well as facilitating professional development opportunities related to teaching and assessment.

  7. Records Management: Maintaining accurate and confidential academic records for students, faculty, and staff, and ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.

  8. Quality Assurance: Monitoring and evaluating the quality of academic programs and services through assessment, feedback mechanisms, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  9. Research Support: Collaborating with academic departments to support research activities, including funding opportunities, ethics review processes, and research dissemination.

  10. Strategic Planning: Contributing to the development and implementation of strategic plans and initiatives to enhance the academic mission and reputation of the university.

  11. Interdepartmental Coordination: Facilitating communication and collaboration between academic departments, administrative units, and external stakeholders to support the university's academic mission and objectives.
