About the Register

On-campus hostels cannot house every student. To help those living off campus, the Directorate of Accommodation Services keeps a register of private hostels in the areas around Kenyatta University’s campuses. For each hostel it lists the owner or caretaker’s contacts, location, charges, the number of vacancies reported and whether rooms are furnished.

The current register was published in August 2024 and covers 72 hostels in four zones:

These are privately owned hostels. Charges and vacancies are as reported in August 2024 and may have changed. Always visit the hostel and confirm the current terms with the owner before you pay anything. Any tenancy agreement is between you and the hostel owner.

Charges are in Kenya Shillings. “2 Sharing” means a room shared by two students; confirm with the hostel whether a price is per person or per room. Vacancies are the number reported in August 2024.

Choosing a Hostel

Visit first

Inspect the room, water, power and sanitation before committing. Ask whether power is on tokens and whether hot water is available.

Confirm the terms

Agree the rent, deposit, registration fee and payment period (monthly or per semester) in writing, and ask whether the deposit is refundable.

Get receipts

Pay the owner or caretaker listed in the register and keep a receipt for every payment.

Think about the route

Check the distance to your campus and how safe the route is, especially if you will walk early in the morning or late in the evening.

Hostel Rules & Regulations

The Directorate’s Hostel Safety Rules & Regulations: ‘Your guide to a secure stay’ applies to all residents of the University’s halls of residence. Students in private hostels should follow their landlord’s rules, and are encouraged to follow the same standards of conduct and safety.

  1. The University reserves the right to allocate rooms.
  2. Allocation is for one academic year only; you must reapply every year. Self-allocation or breaking into rooms leads to disciplinary action, including a surcharge and loss of residence.
  3. Residents must be registered for at least four units per semester to qualify for accommodation.
  4. Transfers or swaps are not allowed except on medical or other approved grounds. A breach leads to loss of residence for one academic year.
  5. No refunds or reversals are issued once hostel fees have been invoiced.
  6. Sharing rooms and common facilities (e.g. wardrobes, reading tables) is mandatory. Refusing leads to loss of residence.
  7. You must sign an inventory form on allocation, accepting responsibility for the room’s condition. Damage is surcharged.
  8. Clear with the housekeeper at the end of each semester. Failing to clear and return keys attracts a Ksh 2,500 non-clearance fee plus Ksh 1,000 per unreturned key.
  9. Staying in the hostels during vacations needs written permission and, where granted, advance payment.
  1. Buying or selling rooms leads to immediate expulsion from residence, a fine of Ksh 10,000 for each party and disciplinary action.
  2. Residents are responsible for the security of their belongings; the University is not liable for loss or damage. Keep your room locked at all times and carry your key with you to class.
  1. Misusing or destroying hostel property is a serious offence, surcharged and punished by loss of residence.
  2. Cooking in rooms is strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
  3. Illegal electrical connections lead to immediate loss of residence and surcharges.
  4. Removing furniture or equipment without permission leads to loss of residence for one academic year.
  5. Organising or taking part in demonstrations or parties without permission leads to loss of residence.
  6. Undue noise, such as loud music, is prohibited. Report disturbances to the Housekeeper or Night Attendant.
  7. Drunkenness, unruly or rowdy behaviour leads to loss of residence for the rest of the academic year.
  8. Drug abuse or selling drugs leads to loss of residence and further disciplinary action.
  9. Threats, incitement, insults, bullying, fighting and any religious or tribal intolerance are prohibited.
  10. Sexual harassment, attempted rape or rape lead to loss of residence and further disciplinary action.
  11. Stickers and campaign posters are not allowed on hostel walls; removal and repainting costs are charged to the offender.
  1. Male visitors in ladies’ hostels, and vice versa, are only allowed between 10:00 am and 10:00 pm. A violation leads to loss of residence for one academic year.
  2. Overnight visitors are not allowed in rooms. Both host and visitor are fined Ksh 500 per night, and residence is revoked for one academic year.
  3. Report all theft to the Directorate of Security Services. Do not take the law into your own hands.
  4. Anyone suspected or found guilty of theft immediately loses residence and faces further disciplinary action.
  5. Keeping pets in hostels is prohibited.
  6. Running a business in the hostels leads to loss of accommodation for the rest of the academic year.

Personal Security Tips

  • Do not leave valuables (phones, laptops, chargers, money, shoes) on window sills, tables or shelves.
  • Do not leave your phone or laptop unattended in your room; deposit them at the security office for safekeeping.
  • Always lock your windows and door when you leave and before you sleep.
  • Never share your keys or leave them on the door frame.
  • Report suspicious people or activities to hostel staff or security straight away, and get to know your neighbours.
  • Do not allow hawking or fundraising in the hostels; report anyone doing so.
