Master of Science (Physics)

Introduction

MSc. in Physics is intended to provide knowledge, skills and attitudes for analyzing scientific data from the diverse fields with application to solving scientific problems.

With ongoing development in science and technology, there is need for qualified persons in physics to understand and apply new ideas to research and development.

Programme objective

To produce qualified manpower in different areas of physics capable of applying physics ideas for research and development.

Justification/Rationale

With ongoing development in science and technology, there is need for qualified persons in physics to understand and apply new ideas to research and development. The programme has gone through a full cycle and hence the need to review it. The review was informed by new developments in the field of physics, current market trends and feedback from stakeholders.

Entry Requirements

The following shall be eligible for registration in the Master of Science (Physics):

  1. A holder of at least an upper second class Honours (Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Education (Science) (B.Sc. or B.Ed. (Sc.)) in which Physics was taken as a major subject with Mathematics. An applicant, who has taken Physics as a regular subject with mathematics, may be admitted provided he/she takes remedial courses as recommended by the department.
  2. A holder of a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Education degree with lower second class, and has majored in Physics, may be considered for admission on condition that he/she produces a clear evidence of proven research ability, provided also that a candidate must have studied Mathematics as one of the subjects.

Mode and Structure of Delivery

The Master of Science in Physics programme shall be offered on a blended mode comprising of:

  1. Face to face (Full time)
  2. Blended (for CEP): Online and face to face

Programme Duration

The programme will extend for two academic yearsThe programmes are offered on semester basis per academic year.  Each academic year shall consist of two (2) semesters for full time students and three (3) sessions for Continuing Education Programmes.  In the first year, the student will take taught courses while in the second academic year; the student will conduct research and write a thesis.
