Kenyatta University proudly participated in the Nairobi International Trade Fair 2024, held from 23rd to 28th September under the theme: Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth. As a premier educational institution, Kenyatta University showcased its commitment to this theme by exhibiting 25 diverse projects that intersect multiple sectors, with a strong alignment to the trade fair’s objectives.
These projects were developed by both students and staff across key university departments and directorates, including the Chandaria Innovation and Incubation Centre, the School of Engineering, the School of Hospitality and Tourism, and notably, the School of Agriculture.
Kenyatta University competitively entered seven key categories in the trade fair:
- Best Stand Embracing Information Technology and Communication Systems
- Best Stand in Youth Activities, Empowerment, and Capacity Building
- Stand that Best Interprets the Current Show Theme (Education and Research section)
- Best Stand in Hospitality and Catering Services
- Best University Stand
- Best Stand in Research and Development (Educational category)
- Best Innovation and Invention Stand
In recognition of its exemplary work, Kenyatta University achieved notable accolades, securing 1st position in the Best Stand in Research and Development (Educational section) and 3rd position in the Best University Stand. These accolades underscore the institution’s
leading role in driving research, development, and innovation within the academic and broader societal context.
The judging panel, which convened on the 23rd of September, meticulously evaluated each exhibit based on its societal relevance, applicability, and the transformative potential of the showcased projects. Kenyatta University’s stand stood out for its innovative approaches and impactful contributions to research and development
At the opening ceremony, His Excellency Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the event Chief Guest, emphasized the vital role of academia in shaping sectors beyond education. He advocated for stronger linkages between academic research and practical application, particularly in agriculture, which aligns with the trade fair’s overarching theme. The Deputy President reiterated the government’s commitment to funding research aimed at increasing agricultural productivity, reducing the burdens on farmers, and enhancing food security.
Kenyatta University, through its Research, Innovation and Outreach Division, National Phytotherapeutic Research Centre, and Chandaria Innovation and Incubation Centre, remains well-positioned to bridge the gap between academic research and industry needs.
These initiatives serve as conduits for connecting innovative research with tangible, real-world impact across various sectors, thereby contributing to sustainable economic growth.
