Our Commitment

Kenyatta University wants everyone who visits this website, including people with disabilities, to be able to find information, apply for admission and use our services. We aim to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA, and we keep improving the site as we update it.

This commitment is part of the University’s wider work on inclusion, led by the Directorate of Disability Services, and of our duties under Kenyan law on the rights of persons with disabilities.

Using This Website

The website is built so that you can:

  • move around using only a keyboard: press Tab to move between links and buttons, and use the Skip to main content link at the top of each page to jump past the menu;
  • use a screen reader: pages use headings, lists and labelled links, menus and forms, and most images have text descriptions;
  • zoom in without losing content: the layout adjusts to the screen size, from phones to large monitors;
  • find pages through the menu, the search boxes on long lists (such as Programmes Offered) and the Site Map.

Adjusting Your Browser

Your browser and device can make the website easier to use:

  • Make text bigger: press Ctrl and + (Cmd and + on a Mac); Ctrl and 0 returns to normal size.
  • Read pages aloud: use a screen reader such as NVDA (free, Windows), Narrator (Windows), VoiceOver (Mac, iPhone, iPad) or TalkBack (Android).
  • Change colours: turn on high contrast or dark mode in your device’s accessibility settings.

The My Computer My Way guide from AbilityNet explains these settings step by step.

Documents

Many forms, handbooks and notices on this website are PDF files. Some older documents are scanned images, which screen readers cannot read. If you need a document in another format, such as accessible PDF, Word, large print or Braille, contact us (see below) and tell us which document you need and the format that works for you.

Known Limitations

We know that some parts of the website are not yet fully accessible:

  • some older PDF documents are scanned and have no readable text;
  • some videos from YouTube and other providers may not have captions;
  • embedded maps from Google Maps may be hard to use with a keyboard or screen reader. The address and directions are also given in text on each contact section.

We are working to fix these as pages and documents are updated.

Report a Problem

If you have difficulty using any part of this website, please tell us. Email info@ku.ac.ke with “Website accessibility” in the subject, and include:

  • the address (URL) of the page;
  • what you were trying to do and what went wrong;
  • the device, browser and any assistive technology you use (for example, a screen reader).

You can also call +254 20 870 3000 or use the Complaints page. We will reply and, where we can, give you the information in another way while we fix the problem.

Disability Services

Students, staff and applicants with disabilities can get support with admission, learning materials, examinations, accommodation and getting around campus from the Directorate of Disability Services.
