The Kenyatta University Men’s football team qualified to represent Africa in the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Football World Cup to be held in Jinjiang, China from the 21st to 31st of October 2023. The event will be the second edition of the games with the first one held in 2021. Top University Football teams will compete to become the next FISU football World Cup winners. A total of 12 men teams and 8 women teams will participate in the event. The continental qualifying tournaments were used to select the teams participating in the event.
The African qualifying event was held at Kenyatta University in June 2022 where the KU men’s football team also known as “hardnuts” beat all teams to emerge winners.
The team has been in a residential camp since July in preparation for the event. A total of 30 students are currently undergoing training under the tutelage of football tacticians Tobias Ochola, Carolyne Ajowi and Joseph Ndungu. The programs lined up are physical, technical and tactical training; build-up matches, gym sessions, hydrotherapy sessions and expert talks.
So far, the team has had expert talks from the anti-doping agency of Kenya on performance-enhancing substances. Other talks lined up will be on mental preparation, athlete conduct on and off the field, etiquette, and public relations among others.
