Kenyatta University Television and Radio Services (KUTV & RS) is making waves with its latest community outreach initiative! The team recently embarked on a vibrant roadshow to showcase the university’s media training programs, connect with the public, and spread awareness about the power of media in today’s digital world. This event was made possible through the support of key stakeholders, including the University management, the Kenyatta University Centre for Gender Equity and Empowerment, and the Directorate of KUTV & RS, all playing a crucial role in its success.

With music, excitement, and meaningful conversations, the KUTV & RS caravan set off from Kenyatta University, making lively stops along Thika Superhighway. From Kenyatta Market to Githurai, the team engaged with the community, sharing insights into media training opportunities and the exciting programs available at KUTV & RS. “We wanted to create an experience where people could interact with us, learn about media, and see firsthand what KUTV & RS has to offer,” shared Boniface Odhiambo, KUTV’s Programs
and Acquisition Manager.
KUTV & RS isn’t just about broadcasting—it’s a platform for hands-on learning! The roadshow highlighted the university’s top-notch media training programs, designed to equip students with practical skills for the fast-paced journalism and broadcasting industry. For just Ksh 25,520, students can enroll in an intensive one-month training program covering areas like audio-video editing, TV studio operations, journalism, news reporting, and anchoring. These courses provide real-world experience in KUTV’s modern studios, setting graduates on the path to successful careers in media. And the best part? Over 80% of students who complete the training secure internships and jobs within six months! Now that’s an opportunity worth exploring.

Beyond media training, KUTV & RS used this roadshow to highlight important social issues. A key highlight of the event was, the KU Centre for Gender equity and Empowerment took the opportunity to advocate against gender-based violence (GBV) and inform the public about free support services available for survivors on an App by the Centre. Additionally, Mental 360, championed for mental health awareness, encouraging open discussions on emotional well-being and support services available for the youth. “Our goal is to create a safe space where people can talk about the challenges they face,” said Ochieng Fred, Programs Officer at Mental 360. Additionally, the event featured interactive sessions on responsible media consumption, digital journalism, and the power of ethical storytelling in shaping informed communities.

The caravan, under the microphone leadership of Presenter Ojwang Mariam snaked through Kiwanja, Ruiru town, Juja town, Witeithie, Bypass and finished strong at Kahawa Sukari shopping center. As the roadshow wrapped up, the excitement and engagement from participants proved the event’s success. People from all walks of life joined in, playing games, interacting with the team, and learning more about media and education at Kenyatta University. The engagement included a loaf with soad eating contest for which the winner was ably rewarded. The response from the public was amazing and KUTV has a strong following with the community.
“This was an incredible experience! The turnout was great, and we got to meet so many enthusiastic people eager to learn more about Kenya Premier University, Kenyatta University and KUTV & RS,” said KUTV’s TPAM Manager, Mr. Boniface Odhiambo.
KUTV & RS remains committed to making education and media training accessible to all. Whether through TV, radio, or on-the-ground interactions like this roadshow, the station continues to bridge the gap between academia and the media industry.
