Kenyatta University students gained insights into the evolving world of work during a Future of Work Lab featuring an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-focused hackathon organised by the Directorate of Career Development and Mentoring Programmes on 23 September 2026.
The engagement provided students with an opportunity to explore emerging workplace trends, understand changing labour market demands and reflect on the skills required to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven professional environment.
The session was facilitated by Devika Duggal, Founder of HumAIn, a leadership development and capability transformation initiative, and Gautam Duggal, Global Senior Vice President, Human Resources, specialising in enterprise capability and workforce transformation.
A key focus of the engagement was the evolving relationship between Artificial Intelligence and human capabilities in the workplace. Students explored how AI can support organisations by handling repetitive and data-driven tasks, while human capabilities such as creativity, critical thinking, communication, empathy, ethical judgement and strategic decision-making remain essential.
The Future of Work Lab encouraged students to look beyond academic qualifications and consider how they can position themselves competitively in the changing job market. Adaptability, digital literacy, continuous learning and the ability to work alongside emerging technologies were highlighted as important capabilities for the modern workplace.
The engagement aligns with the Directorate’s mandate to support students through career guidance, mentoring, leadership development, recruitment and placement, while preparing them to navigate an evolving employment landscape.
Through the Future of Work Lab, students were encouraged to think ahead, develop relevant skills and embrace opportunities that will prepare them for the workplace of tomorrow.
