Geospatial information technology for research in environment, urban planning, land use and public health
The Kenyatta University Geospatial Information Technology Lab (KU GIS Lab) supports mapping and spatial analysis for research in environment, urban planning, land use and public health. The lab gained national prominence for its COVID-19 response work, producing daily status dashboards, mapping isolation and quarantine facilities, and communicating movement restriction information to the public.
Powered by a campus-wide Esri enterprise site licence, the lab provides ArcGIS tools and training to students and researchers, publishes public-facing applications such as Kenya county population maps from the 2019 census, and runs workshops on remote sensing and flood and drought hazard assessment. Partners include Esri Eastern Africa, the Stanford University Geospatial Centre, JICA, IGAD/ICPAC, RCMRD and ICIPE.
ArcGIS software access for students, staff and researchers under the Esri site licence.
COVID-19 dashboards, facility mapping and public information services.
Interactive mapping of Kenya county population data from the 2019 census.
Natural resource planning and monitoring using satellite earth observation data.
Workshops on remote sensing and flood/drought hazard assessment with partners.
Spatial analysis support for theses, faculty research and county planning.
