Improving Infectious Disease Epidemiology in Metropolitan areas — research in Nairobi's urban corridors
The IIDEMIC project — Improving Infectious Disease Epidemiology in Metropolitan areas — conducts epidemiological research in Nairobi's densely populated urban corridors. Rapid urbanisation, informal settlements and high population mobility create conditions where infectious diseases can spread quickly; IIDEMIC generates the evidence needed to understand and interrupt these transmission dynamics.
The project brings together KU researchers in public health, epidemiology and related disciplines to strengthen disease surveillance, characterise transmission patterns in metropolitan settings, and inform preparedness and response planning by national and county health authorities.
Strengthening surveillance of infectious diseases in Nairobi's urban corridors.
Characterising how infections spread in dense, mobile metropolitan populations.
Mapping disease hotspots and risk factors across urban settlements.
Evidence to inform county and national outbreak preparedness and response.
Working with urban communities in study design and findings dissemination.
Training postgraduate students and health workers in field epidemiology.
