Kenyatta University (KU) has taken another step towards strengthening institutional harmony and global competitiveness following a courtesy call by newly elected officials of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), marking a renewed chapter of structured social dialogue after several years.
The delegation, led by UASU Chairman-elect Dr. Monanda Steven, was received by the University Management in a meeting that underscored mutual commitment to seamless engagement, progressive labour relations, and the creation of a stable academic environment aligned with international best practices.
Congratulating the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Okumu, on his stewardship, Dr. Monanda noted that the visit served as an introductory engagement aimed at resetting relations between the Union and University Management. He emphasised the need to minimise conflict through healthier, dialogue-driven mechanisms, observing that constructive labour relations are critical for institutions seeking to enhance their international standing.
Dr Monanda further highlighted that UASU continues to operate under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed nine years ago, with the 2021–2025 CBA yet to be registered, even as discussions are shifting towards the 2026–2031 cycle. He appealed for the Vice-Chancellor’s indulgence in supporting the implementation of outstanding CBA provisions, noting that predictable and harmonised labour frameworks are essential for academic stability, staff morale, and the University’s ability to attract and retain talent in an increasingly competitive global higher education landscape.
He also urged the newly elected delegates to uphold their mandates responsibly, having been entrusted by fellow staff through a democratic process.
Providing further insights, the UASU Secretary General reported an unprecedented 83.1 per cent voter turnout, the highest in recent years, reflecting renewed confidence in union leadership. Key issues raised included the improvement of lecture rooms and teaching materials, addressing delayed or unpredictable payroll timelines, and resolving discrepancies in the payment of arrears. These matters were presented in a measured and non-confrontational manner, with emphasis placed on collaboration rather than contestation.The Secretary General also reiterated calls for structured and scheduled staff promotions, echoing sentiments previously emphasised by the Chairperson of Council, Prof. Clara Momanyi, during the Vice-Chancellor’s farewell address. Additionally, the Union noted that sister unions had successfully concluded CBAs in 2017 and 2021, expressing a desire for UASU to be similarly onboarded to ensure parity and institutional cohesion.
Responding to the concerns, the University Management expressed optimism and alignment with the Union’s vision. The Vice-Chancellor affirmed that both parties shared a common goal, emphasising that a motivated academic workforce is central to delivering quality service, enhancing research output, and positioning Kenyatta University as a globally competitive institution.
The Registrar (Administration and Finance), Prof. Paul Gachanja, welcomed the renewed engagement, noting that structured social partnership had been missing for several years. He described the Union’s onboarding as a timely development that would strengthen labour relations and support institutional stability.
Similarly, the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance), Prof. Paul Okemo, congratulated UASU on the successful elections, revealing that restoring union operations had been a long-standing priority. He commended the high voter turnout, indicating strong staff engagement and assured the delegation that Management was prepared to jointly address emerging issues. He further announced a follow-up forum scheduled for the following Monday, where staff concerns raised during the campaign period would be formally discussed.
The Registrar (Corporate Affairs), Prof. Mildred Nawiri, also congratulated the delegates-elect, reinforcing the University’s commitment to transparent communication and cordial engagement.
In his closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor reiterated the importance of unity, mutual respect, and amicable resolution of issues, noting that internal stability remains a cornerstone for advancing Kenyatta University’s internationalisation agenda. He expressed personal interest in working closely with the Union to resolve matters constructively.
On the process of assuming office, the Union leadership clarified that registration is expected to be completed within 14 days, after which the delegates will formally assume their roles.
The meeting was attended by senior University officials and Union leaders, including Vice-Chairperson Dr. Kibe Macharia and Chapter Secretary Mr. Bunyari Magero, among other elects, signalling a renewed spirit of partnership anchored in dialogue, shared responsibility, and a collective vision for Kenyatta University’s future on the global academic stage.
